Found September 20, 2013 on Phillies Nation:
When Tim Beckham took the field last night for the Tampa Bay Rays, he became the 34th first round or supplemental first round pick from the 2008 MLB Draft to reach the Major Leagues. It took the former number-one overall pick six seasons, including two-and-a-half seasons in Triple-A, to have enough seasoning to join the Tampa Bay Rays. Somewhat surprisingly, Beckham is the first player drafted by the Rays since 2007 to reach the Major Leagues. To be fair, the Rays did draft Zach Rosscup in 2009 and Derek Dietrich in 2010, players who reached the Majors but did so after being traded by the Rays. Compared to the Rays’ seemingly-paltry tally of just three players drafted after 2007 reaching the Majors, the Phillies have had 20 (seven from 2007′s class, nine from 2008′s class, two from 2009′s class, one from 2010′s class, and one from 2011′s class). Some, Brian Schlitter, Travis d’Arnaud, Michael Taylor, Jarred Cosart, Josh Zeid among others, reached the big leagues with other teams aft...

Storyline: Youth infusion mirrors 1980′s Philadelphia Phillies

The 2014 auditions are visible in the clubhouse to the decision-makers of the Philadelphia Phillies, who, for example, can observe Cody Asche’s preparation. In other words, most of us only see the performances on the diamond. During spring training, the lid on that refuge may open a crack. TAL’S HANDY CAPS Welcome, Newcomers: This article represents the thinking of a baseball...

Stutes Activated for Tonight’s Game

Per the Phillies’ Twitter account, Michael Stutes has been activated for tonight’s game against the New York Mets. Stutes last pitched in an 8-7 win over the New York Mets on June 22, allowing three earned runs and leaving with bicep tendonitis before recording an out. Stutes will be replacing Kyle Kendrick on the active roster and Zach Miner will replace Kyle Kendrick in the...

Kyle Kendrick shut down for remainder of the season

On Friday, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that pitcher Kyle Kendrick has been shut down for the remainder of the season after getting a second opinion regarding the tendonitis in his right shoulder. Phillies Lose 5-4 In Rain-Shortened Game

Rain shortened Saturday’s game between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets.  The rains heavily picked up in the seventh inning, causing the game to stop.  After a significant delay, the game was finally called.  In result, the Phillies lost to the Mets, 5-4, in seven innings of play. The Mets had a four-run sixth inning, which was basically the game.  Daniel Murphy...

Phillies Struggle in Loss to Mets

For the first time since 2002, Phillies have clinched a losing season. Tonight marked their 82nd loss on the year. Cole Hamels had a rough night, surrendering six earned runs for the first time since May. He let up three of those before recording an out in the first, including allowing a homer to David Wright, in his first at-bat since August 2. Daisuke Matsuzaka allowed four (two...

Hamels victimized in Phillies' 6-4 loss to Mets

As has been the case for much of this season, some bad luck played a role in Cole Hamels' defeat. David Wright homered, Daniel Murphy had three hits and Daisuke Matsuzaka earned his second straight victory in New York's 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. Hamels (8-14) lost for the first time since July 26. The left-hander entered Friday 4-0 with a 2...

Phillies lose to Mets in rain-shortened game

The way the Phillies were building momentum, they might have won Saturday night had the rain not gotten in their way. David Wright and Daniel Murphy hit solo home runs and the New York Mets beat Philadelphia 5-4 Saturday night in a game called in the top of the seventh inning because of rain. ''It's a tough way to take a loss, a rain-shortened game,'' Philadelphia...

The Most Clutch Hits Of 2013

With the 2013 season winding down, let’s take a look at the most clutch hits of the year. I put clutch hits in two categories, the first one being hits with the highest Win Probability Added (WPA), and the second one being hits in situations with the highest Leverage Index (LI). The reason for this separation is that hits with a very high WPA come in situations with a lower LI...

Kendrick Shut Down For The Rest Of The Season

It was announced last night that Kyle Kendrick will be shut down for the remainder of the 2013 season after a second opinion. It appears precautionary as Kendrick, at 182, has reached a career high in innings pitched. He started off really strong this season but a dreadful second half...

Mets-Phillies Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies may be feeling confident about extending a successful home stretch behind Cole Hamels, but the New York Mets are also optimistic about the return of their captain. Salisbury: Sandberg’s Solid Status, Bowa on Bench?

Photo: MLB.com Jim Salisbury wrote early this morning that it “seems to be a fait accompli“ that Ryne Sandberg will soon have the interim tag lifted from his job title. Salisbury believes that an announcement may come before the September 29 season-ender in Atlanta or in the days shortly after. Sandberg has led the Phillies to a 18-14 record since taking over the club. Salisbury...
