ATLANTA (AP) -- Jason Heyward homered and scored three runs and the Atlanta Braves snapped a string of 16 straight losses on Mondays, including 12 this season, by beating the Miami Marlins 8-2 on Monday night. Starting pitcher Tommy Hanson was the only Atlanta player or coach who did not wear high socks in an apparent old-school fashion attempt to end the Monday curse. Hanson (12-5) still had his pants low to his shoes as he gave up one run on six hits in five innings. The Braves, coming off a three-game sweep of the Phillies, have won six straight. The Braves won on a Monday for the first time since Aug. 22, 2011, a 3-0 win at the Cubs. Atlanta, a season-best 14 games over .500, trails first-place Washington by 3 1-2 games in the NL East. Miami left-hander Mark Buehrle (9-10) gave up six runs on eight hits and four walks in 4 1-3 innings. He still needs one win for his 12th straight season with at least 10 wins. Buehrle was making his second start against the Braves in seven ...

Medlen replaces Jurrjens in rotation

Manager Fredi Gonzalez said right-hander Jair Jurrjens "was fine" when he was told Saturday that he'd be going to the bullpen, replaced in the rotation for the foreseeable future by right-hander Kris Medlen. However, Medlen will join the rotation Tuesday night against Miami only if general manager Frank Wren is unable to swing a deal for a veteran starter by that afternoon...

Braves place RHP Hanson on 15-day disabled list

The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Tommy Hanson on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained lower back. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez had said Hanson - who is 12-5 with a 4.29 ERA - would likely be given extra rest before his next scheduled start, but Monday night's trade with the Cubs for Paul Maholm made that move unnecessary. Maholm will join the Braves on Wednesday...

Braves win 7th straight behind Medlen

ATLANTA (AP) -- Kris Medlen had a successful return to the rotation, Brian McCann homered and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-1 on Tuesday night for their seventh straight win. Atlanta has won 10 of 13 to close within 2 games of first-place Washington in the NL East following the Nationals' 8-0 loss to Philadelphia. Rain delayed the game 1 hour, 53 minutes before...

Braves complete sweep, beat Halladay, Phillies

ATLANTA (AP) -- Jason Heyward and Chipper Jones homered off Roy Halladay, and the Atlanta Braves completed a three-game sweep of the last-place Philadelphia Phillies with a 6-2 victory Sunday. Atlanta, which began the day four games behind first-place Washington in the NL East, has won five straight. Tim Hudson (10-4) gave up two runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings. Hudson combined...

Minor, Braves shut down Phillies 2-1

ATLANTA -- Mike Minor solidified his spot in the Braves' inconsistent rotation with a Tom Glavine-esque fastball -- 89 mph -- with which he struck out nine Phillies over eight innings to lead the Braves to a 2-1 win Saturday. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 30th save. "We got two runs and we made it count," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. Minor didn't...

Braves finish off sweep of Phillies

ATLANTA -- Chipper Jones doesn't usually play a day game after a night game, but he had to play Sunday when the Phillies sent Roy Halladay to the mound, because Jones was batting .500 against him. And Jones delivered again, scoring one run and driving in another with a home run to lead the Braves to a 6-2 win and a series sweep of their National League East division rivals....

Marlins struggle offensively, fall to hot Braves

ATLANTA (AP) -- Kris Medlen had a successful return to the rotation, Brian McCann homered and the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-1 on Tuesday night for their seventh straight win. Atlanta has won 10 of 13 to close within 2 games of first-place Washington in the NL East following the Nationals' 8-0 loss to Philadelphia. Rain delayed the game 1 hour, 53 minutes before...

Game Day Pictures: Braves vs Phillies 7-28-12

Player of the game. :) Mike's gameface and smileface are so different - love it! And, can I just say, I'm pretty tired of people saying he doesn't belong in our rotation. He clearly does. He's had a rough inning here and there but for the most part he's been awesome. Seems like Glavine always gave up runs in the first but then he settled in and now? Now his number...

Braves 2, Phillies 1

ATLANTA -- Mike Minor solidified his spot in the Atlanta Braves' inconsistent rotation with a Tom Glavine-esque fastball -- 89 mph -- with which he struck out nine Philadelphia Phillies over eight innings to lead the Braves to a 2-1 win Saturday. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 30th save. Minor didn't rattle when Chase Utley hit a solo home run in the fourth inning...

Braves acquire Maholm, Johnson from Cubs

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves have boosted their rotation and added a right-handed bat to their bench by acquiring left-hander Paul Maholm and outfielder Reed Johnson from the Chicago Cubs. Braves general manager Frank Wren confirmed late Monday night the team is sending right-handed pitchers Arodys Vizcaino, a top prospect who had season-ending Tommy John surgery in April...

Marlins-Braves Preview

Atlanta Braves right-hander Tommy Hanson had very little control last week against the Miami Marlins, but it all worked out. It didn't for the uncharacteristically wild Mark Buehrle in his recent outing versus Atlanta. Hanson will try to lead the Braves to a sixth consecutive victory Monday night and help them continue their mastery of the Marlins as he squares off against...
