Luke Hochevar gave Kansas City Royals fans another reason to lament the 2006 draft. The right-hander allowed five runs in the first inning Tuesday to put the Royals in an early hole en route to a 9-3 loss to the Tigers. Hochevar was the first overall pick in 2006. That was the same draft that produced Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who won the National League Cy Young Award last year, and Giants right-hander Tim Lincecum, who has two Cy Young trophies on his mantel. Where would the Royals be if they had selected one of them instead of Hochevar, who owns a 32-45 career record? Meanwhile, Hochevar continues to struggle and at age 28 remains an enigma. He is 2-2 with a 7.36 ERA in five starts this season. He allowed nine runs on 12 hits and three walks in four innings in the loss at Detroit. The first seven Tigers reached base off Hochevar -- six hits and a throwing error by first baseman Eric Hosmer. This brought back memories of the Friday the 13th home opener, when Hoc...

The Royals are playing better, but they still need to improve

Despite a 7-16 record and a recent 12 game losing streak, the Kansas City Royals went 4-3 on their last road trip and are only five games out of first place in the American League Central. And in six of their 16 losses, they only lost by one run. If the Royals went 6-6 instead of 0-12 during their losing streak, they would be 13-10 and leading the A.L. Central. Fans would be talking...

“Our Time.” Two words driving a fan base nuts.

By Zachary Farwell As the Kansas City Royals marketing department looks for the nearest rock to hide under—the fan base is left wondering what happened to “Our Time.” Who’s to blame? Lack of talent? An owner who doesn’t open the pocket book? Or that nasty 12 game losing streak. When Dayton Moore came to Kansas City, spoke of a team that made a fan base thirst for...

My Second-Favorite Royals: Position by Position

The lists that show us the best all-time of a team or a certain position bore me.  Plus, they always have that, "How can you leave out [Player X]?!!!" element to them.  To change it up a bit, I came up with a list of my own second-favorite Kansas City Royals based on their position.  This is neither statistical nor scouting based; it is just based on the illogical observations...

Latest rainout causes another rotation shuffle for Royals

The rainout Saturday at Minnesota was welcome, giving the Kansas City Royals pitching staff and especially the bullpen a needed rest. The rainout Monday night at Detroit for what was to be the opener of a three-game series was not as desirable, but it allowed manager Ned Yost to maneuver his rotation again. The revised rotation does not include Luis Mendoza, who will likely be...

“Our Time” To Question “The Process”

After a 6-16 start, Royals fans should no longer give this organization the benefit of the doubt. This column was supposed to be about Albert Pujols’ slow start and how that might effect the Royals’ ability to sign Eric Hosmer to a long-term contract. However, that idea will be saved for another day. Going into Tuesday night’s game, the Royals had won 3 out of their last 4...

Royals 3, Tigers 2

The Kansas City Royals started strongly for a change and finished with a rare win. Chris Getz's infield single in the ninth inning put Kansas City ahead, and the Royals held on to beat Detroit 3-2 Wednesday for their seventh victory this year. Kansas City completed a 4-3 trip - after losing 12 straight - and starts a homestand Thursday night against the New York Yankees. ...

DETROIT (AP) - Chris Getz's infield single in the ninth inning put Kansas City ahead, and the Royals held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Wednesday. Joaquin Benoit (0-1) gave up a double to Mike Moustakas, who advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Getz hit a grounder that was too deep into the hole for shortstop Jhonny Peralta to make a strong enough throw. Tim...

Yankees-Royals Preview

(AP) -- The Kansas City Royals are off to a horrific start at Kauffman Stadium, and it doesn't appear like things will get any easier with visits from a couple of traditional powers. The Royals again look for that elusive first home win in Thursday night's series opener against a New York Yankees team that has typically enjoyed its visits to Kansas City. As host of the...
