On Sunday at Fenway Park, the Red Sox took advantage of an error to cap a 5-4 walkoff win over the Blue Jays and record their American League-leading 50th win of the season.
When Shane Victorino ripped a ground ball that bounced off Toronto first baseman Josh Thole’s mitt and allowed pinch-runner and recent call-up Jonathan Diaz to race home with the game-winning run, it also redeemed Koji Uehara, who blew the save when he surrendered a game-tying homer to Jose Bautista in the top of the ninth.
It was the seventh walkoff victory this season for the Sox. Elias Sports Bureau reports that it’s the first time since 1964 that Boston has recorded that many walkoff wins by the end of June.
Don’t look for many more comparisons to the ’64 edition of the Red Sox, however. That team finished eighth in the American League (72-90) under m...

(USA Today Sports Images)He's been asked to play out of position. He's been thrown into the middle of a pennant race. And, he's performed. Jose Iglesias—who we were told was offensively challenged—hit .395 in 25 June games and has been named FenwayNation's Player Of The Month. Of course, Iglesias still delivered his signature defense during June—making spectacular...
Stephen Drew will miss his third straight game tonight as he is again out of the lineup due to a hamstring injury. Jose Iglesias will start at shortstop and Brandon Snyder will play third. Iglesias has yet to wilt under the bright spotlight of more playing time—and is still above the "Ted Williams Line"—hitting .409 going into tonight's action. David Ortiz is back...
The MLB trade deadline is still a month away, but that won’t preclude the Red Sox from making some moves in the near future.
After trading Pedro Ciriaco and demoting Will Middlebrooks, the Red Sox have been shallow in the infield. That forced Boston to call up Jonathan Diaz and Brandon Snyder, but neither may be long-term options in the bigs.
The Red Sox could also use some help...
MVP Again?National baseball writer for FOX Sports Jon Paul Morosi declared today that Dustin Pedroia is his first-half AL MVP. It's always nice to see Boston players get national recognition—especially at the expense of a Pinstriped Poser. Robinson Cano currently leads Pedroia is All-Star Game balloting—but Morosi's view places him as not only inferior to Pedey at second...
Jonny Gomes is the latest Red Sox player to take the hot seat on Red Sox Small Talk.
Gomes answered the tough questions from the kids, like what his favorite dance move is, if he’s ever gone swimming and what he wants to be when he grows up. Gomes did his best to answer the queries, even if he didn’t know what a paleontologist was.
Check out Gomes’ answers in the video above.
Before suiting up against the Padres on Tuesday, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia took a little detour.
Pedroia stopped by Dana-Farber’s David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Clinic, where he spent time hanging out, signing autographs and playing some Wii with a number of young Jimmy Fund patients.
“You have a responsibility to come here. All of our guys do,” Pedroia...
Sitting 16 games over .500, the Boston Red Sox are receiving significant contributions from players all over their roster, which has translated into early-season success.
Between the stellar starting pitching, timely hitting, and sharp defense, the Red Sox seem to be playing great team baseball heading into the All-Star break. WEEI’s Mike Salk and Rob Bradford debated on NESN...
The Red Sox were able to rally in the ninth inning on Sunday to get a win over the Blue Jays, and it came in walk off fashion.
Starting pitcher Ryan Dempster didn’t factor in the decision, but he battled through 5 1/3 innings to put the Sox in position to win it. He gave up just two runs on seven hits, lowering his ERA to 4.11.
Ryan Lavarnway got the start behind the dish on...
Brandon Snyder hit a bases-loaded double and John Lackey struck out six over eight strong innings for the Boston Red Sox in a 4-1 win over the slumping San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
Lackey (6-5) scattered six hits and walked just one while moving above .500 for the first time since late in 2011. Lackey has won four straight decisions and appears well-healed from the right biceps...
When the Red Sox get to the cleanup spot in their lineup, it will be Jonny Gomes, not David Ortiz, in the batter’s box.
Ortiz is scheduled to get the day off on Sunday, which means manager John Farrell had to do some lineup maneuvering. Gomes will move into left field, Mike Napoli will get the designated hitter duties and Daniel Nava will find himself at first base for a change...
The Red Sox still sit atop the AL East heading into the second half of the season, and it seems like nothing can slow them down.
They’ve already battled injuries and slumps, the the Sox’ depth is part of the reason they have been so successful. After starting strong in April, many fans thought this year’s team could be too good to be true.
NESN Nation’s Alison Smith breaks...
A fielding error by Toronto first baseman Josh Thole off the bat of Shane Victorino in the bottom of the ninth inning helped the Red Sox to a 5-4 win and a series win over Toronto at Fenway Park on Sunday afternoon. The win was the 50th of the season for the Red Sox, the first American League team to reach the half-century mark in 2013.
8 a.m. ET: John Lackey has been pitching just fine this season without cupcake opponents, but it still must be nice to get two straight starts against the middling National League West.
Lackey takes the ball for the Red Sox (50-34) on Tuesday night after putting up some career numbers his last time out at Fenway Park. In his last start, on Wednesday, he went seven innings and struck...
