Let me introduce another new writer (his bio is coming soon) Nathan Mendolowitz. He’s a Giants fan but can root for the A’s on occasion. He will be doing installments of “Hot or Not” of Nor Cal baseball and much more. Sorry ladies, he doesn’t rate them on levels of attractiveness. by Nathan Mendolowitz Barry Zito – Hot Who would have thought Barry Zito would be the shining star of the first week and a half of the season? Picking up where he left off from the post-season, Zito has been the one of the most dominant pitchers in the entire MLB. He is 2-0 allowing zero runs and only 10 hits. The more astounding apart is in those two games, he has only allowed four walks. Adding in last year’s post-season, Zito is 4 – 0 allowing only three runs in 30 innings pitched. And don’t forget his 2-3 hitting against the Rockies with a RBI. Brandon Belt – Not Michael Macor, The Chronicle Brandon Belt is a tale of two hitters. In spring training, Belt was virtually hitting everything. He ended with a batting average at .437 while slugging at .901 with eight homers. However, the start of the season has not been so kind. His average is a sad .156 and his slugging is a measly .219. On top of that, no homers and only five hits with eight strikeouts. Granted, Belt did face two strong lefties in the first series against the Dodgers, but it’s not enough of an excuse for his poor hitting. Coco Crisp – Hot There is no denying Coco Crisp is one of the top leadoff men right now. Batting a cool .318 with four homers and five doubles is one of the main reasons why Oakland is in first place right now after having swept the highly touted Angels. Slugging .705 is more than your average lead man which puts Crisp is his own league for right now. Taking into account his six RBIs puts him ahead of strong players like Buster Posey, Matt Kemp and Josh Hamilton. Yoenis Cespedes – Not Christian Petersen/Getty Images Yes, Yoenis Cespedes has three homers and seven RBIs already, how can he be a not? Well, in 10 games so far he is hitting a lame .211 and has an ugly OBP of .279. Not only that, but he also struck out 12 times already in 38 at-bats which means he strikes out 32 percent of the time. The average of the entire team was 22 percent last year. These stats are not horrible, but at this point of the season Cespedes was thought to have been better. Sergio Romo - Hot Romo’s new nickname the “Serge-protector” truly does fit the way he has been closing out games. In his first six save opportunities, Romo was perfect allowing only two hits and zero runs. He also has fanned 10 batters has issued no walks contributing to a WHIP of .333. Picking up where he left off in the postseason, Romo has allowed only six hits, one run, one walk and handed out 19 strikeouts in a combined 16.2 innings before his first blown save in Chicago. He allowed two runs off of three hits in the loss, raising his ERA from 0.00 to 2.70. Despite Friday’s mishap,  Romo is the definition of shut-down pitching and the nickname serves him well.
