Key members of the Giants’ front office held a press conference with reporters today to announce the contract extensions of manager Bruce Bochy and GM Brian Sabean, and to talk about the team’s goings-on since the season ended last month.

Here’s the gist of the call:

  • There won’t be any big free agent acquisitions this winter (forget about Jose Reyes, Prince Fielder, Jimmy Rollins or even Carlos Beltran, for that matter).
  • The length of contracts for guys like Beltran or other free agent hitters being looked at will be a major consideration for the Giants, who aren’t willing to go beyond a couple of years.
  • CEO Larry Baer confirmed that the team’s payroll will reach $130 million in 2012.
  • The Giants have begun “broad” talks about contract extensions with Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum.
  • Sabean has not ruled out using Brandon Crawford as the starting shortstop next season, provided the rest of the team can carry his load, offensively.
  • Sabean is proud of what Brandon Belt has accomplished so far in winter ball.
  • The Giants are “not sure” if they want to bring Cody Ross back (assuming no one else scoops him up first).
  • In fact, the Giants seem content with going into spring training with the same squad they ended the season with last month (minus Ross, plus Melky Cabrera). It looks like Sabean & Co. are banking on a healthy Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez to push the team back into the playoffs.
  • The sixth time is not a charm for Sabean and his wife, Amanda, who are set to become parents tomorrow for the sixth time. All boys.
  • Pablo Sandoval‘s 10-game stay in Venezuela might be shortened to seven games so he can continue focusing on his conditioning program.

Speaking of Sandoval, the Giants’ All-Star third baseman spent the past few weeks working out at Triple Threat in Arizona. It’s the third straight year that Sandoval has launched Operation Panda. No report yet on how much weight he lost this time.

The Panda has been very busy the past couple of days posting his workout pictures on Twitter. Here are a few that I saw:

Posey, meanwhile, just finished an intense offseason workout regimen with the Giants trainers a couple of weeks ago, and is finally taking some much-needed time off from baseball activities.

He was seen last week in Augusta playing golf with his father and a couple of his dad’s friends.

Here are some pics from Posey’s website:
