The Houston Astros eliminated one question mark on their roster by moving starting pitcher Brett Myers to the closer role for the 2012 season. It is not a new role for Myers, but one that he has not filled since 2007 when he saved 21 games for the Philadelphia Phillies, which are the only 21 saves of his career. The decision pushes Brandon Lyon to a setup role and removes the sleeper status from David Carpenter with Myers now working the ninth inning.

I haven’t yet run my revised fantasy baseball projections for Myers in the closer role, but for my fantasy baseball rankings, I am likely going to slot him in after Matt Capps and ahead of Frank Francisco which would put him at number 28. In terms of a saves projection, I think 30 saves is his upside given the struggles the Astros are going to have in winning games. Given that this is possibly the last year of his contract depending on how many games he finishes if the team option would kick in for 2013, there is also a decent chance that he would get moved at the trade deadline.

By moving Myers, the Astros created a hole in their rotation that they have several less than inspiring candidates to fill it with. Likely it will come down to Livan Hernandez or Zach Duke for the 5th starter role with Kyle Weiland, who was acquired from Boston in the Mark Melancon trade, a long shot.
