That's a question a lot of people are asking these days, as the O's sit atop the standings in the AL East. Short answer: probably not. The team has legitimately played well so far this year, but they're not this good. Right now they're on pace for 100+ wins, and everyone knows they can't keep that pace up. Here's what level they need to play at for the rest of the season to hit various win totals: If they play like a __ win team They'll end up with __ wins 68 75 70 77 72 79 74 80 76 82 78 83 80 85 82 86 84 88 86 89 88 91 90 92 92 94 As you can see, the wins the team has already banked has lifted their floor up a fair bit, but to actually make the playoffs they're probably going to need to play like a "real" playoff team from here on out. Here are guys who might be over-performing: Adam Jones - .302/.350/.591, +6 UZR, 2.5 fWAR Can he kee...

Jones Powers The Orioles to Victory; They Do the Amazing Again...

Well, it’s safe to assume that we are seeing the best of Adam Jones these days. At this point, do the Orioles consider extending him now? Will it get to the point where fans are asking to “pay the man?”I think Jones has now taken his game to another level. Last night showed it.Anyhow, last night, Adam Jones’ solo shot in the 15th inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Baltimore...

Orioles Sweep Royals; Jones and Hardy Help Out Again, Matusz Wins

We are almost at the quarter-pole of the 2012 season, and the Orioles – yes – are still rolling. This afternoon, the Orioles won their third game in a row, and swept the Royals, defeating them, 5-3, in amazing fashion. They are now an astounding 25-14 so far this season and they have the best record in baseball. Once again, the Orioles found themselves in a hole; however, they...

Chen, Hardy and Jones help Orioles defeat Yankees; Earn series split

In the offseason, I questioned a lot of Dan Duquette’s moves – especially Wei-Yin Chen. Honestly, it was to be determined what Chen brought to the table with the Orioles and fans were intrigued what he could do in the majors, most notably against the beasts of the American League East. So far, Chen is passing the test. In fact, he may be singularly well the best pickup that...

Is It 2005 All Over Again?

Tuesday, Rany Jazayerli wrote an article for Grantland wondering if the Orioles are finally a winner in 2012. He has his doubts and begins by listing the multiple "teases" the O's have given their fans in the 21st century. Most of those comparisions are not really teases, at least not like the ride the Birds have taken us on this year. Most of examples Jazayerli points...

How For Real Are The Orioles' Pitchers?

I wrote about the position players yesterday; Adam Jones is clearly playing over his head (we don't know by how much, but I'd wager that he doesn't end the year with 50 home runs), but otherwise things seem relatively reasonable overall. There will be some drop-off there, but maybe not a huge amount. It's on the pitching side where I think more people are holding...

Are we seeing the real Nick Markakis?

I wrote this for MASNSports.com last week. *** As we are seven weeks into the 2012 season, the Orioles are flying high with a 19-11 record, and are a half-game out of first in the American League East. Baltimore's fast start has given players like Matt Wieters, Adam Jones and Chris Davis some national attention. However, one name that I don't see mentioned a lot happens...

Orioles 5, Yankees 2

Wei-Yin Chen pitched seven innings of four-hit ball, Adam Jones homered and the Baltimore Orioles beat CC Sabathia and the New York Yankees 5-2 Tuesday night. J.J. Hardy drove in two runs for Baltimore, which earned a split of the two-game series and improved to 1-4 at home against New York. Chen (4-0) allowed two runs, struck out four and walked two in a masterful performance...

Yankees acquire INF Antonelli off waivers

The Yankees have acquired minor league infielder Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. The 27-year-old appeared in 29 games with Triple-A Norfolk this season, batting .204 (19 for 93) with four doubles, one home run and seven RBIs. The Yankees announced the move Thursday. Antonelli has played games at first base, second base, third base and shortstop this season...

Orioles 5, Royals 3

Adam Jones hit a two-run homer, J.J. Hardy also drove in a pair of runs and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Thursday for their seventh straight road win. The Orioles also improved to 12-1 when Jones goes deep, including a victory over the Royals the previous night, when his homer in the 15th inning decided the game. Jones has homered 13 times this year...

Orioles 4, Royals 3(15)

Adam Jones homered with one out in the 15th inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Jones was hitless in six at-bats before connecting for his team-leading 12th home run - nine of them tying the game or giving the Orioles a lead. Jones sent a 2-2 pitch from Nate Adcock (0-1), the fifth Kansas City pitcher, far over the...

Yankees claim infielder Matt Antonelli from Orioles

The Yankees have claimed infielder Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, according to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun. Antonelli, 27, was drafted by the San Diego Padres 17th overall in the 2006 draft and was once ranked as high as No. 50 on Baseball America’s top prospects list. His major league experience is limited to 21 games for the Padres back in...

Royals blow late lead, lose to Orioles 4-3 in 15th

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Adam Jones homered with one out in the 15th inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Jones was hitless in six at-bats before connecting for his team-leading 12th home run -- nine of them tying the game or giving the Orioles a lead. Jones sent a 2-2 pitch from Nate Adcock (0-1), the fifth Kansas...

Orioles-Royals Preview

(AP) -- Adam Jones seems to do his best work as a one-man wrecking crew, and that's fine with the Baltimore Orioles. Jones and the Orioles seek to extend their longest road winning streak in more than 12 years Thursday when they wrap up a two-game series at Kansas City against the Royals. Jones' 12 homers are good for a third-place tie in the AL, but still far behind the...
