The big question around the Cardinals is who will play shortstop this season; overshadowed by this is the issue of the bench.
The first spot is reserved for the back up catcher…most likely Tony Cruz. The guy can’t hit, but they used him last year in this role and makes next to nothing. There are worse options for more money.
Free agent pick up Ty Wigginton figures to take up the second spot. The guy can fill in at a couple positions and has a little more power than most of the bench guys the Cardinals have had over the last couple of years. My only concern is the fact that Wigginton is a horrible pinch hitter.
Spot three goes to Matt Carpenter/Dan Descalso; one will be the starter at second and the other will be on the bench. I’d prefer to have Carpenter start and Descalso as the defensive replacement; Carpenter can hit a lot better. These guys are fine of the bench because they are defensively versatile and both have experience as pinch hitters.
That leaves 2 spots and a lo...
