Some might have predicted a Subway Series sweep – but by the Yankees, not the Mets. It may not mean anything to the Baseball world at large but this series meant everything to the Mets and their fans. This was supposed to be the toughest part of the Mets schedule to date with the games with the braves , followed by the 4 games that just concluded with the Yankees. On Paper the Yankees B team should have beaten the Mets A team plain and simple. The Mets were a team in search of itself, coming off a come from behind win against the Braves that seemed to give the team a lift. The Yankees despite missing Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriquez, Andy Pettite and Curtis Granderson the Yankees have been holding their own coming into the series they were 11 games over 500 and the Mets were 11 games under 500. Now the Yankees are in second place in the American League East 2 games behind the Boston RedSox. The Yankees are 7 games over 500 and the Mets are 7 games under 500, by the way Met fams don’t look now but the Mets who are in 4th place are only 2.5 behind the Phillies for 3rd place in the National League East. It’s not often Met fans get to gloat over Yankee fan but when they do it is oh so sweet. ”It’s always fun to win this series, especially for our fans,” Mets captain David Wright said. ”It gives our fans some bragging rights.” ”You’re playing as hard as you always do, but you know it’s something special for the fans,” Byrd said. ”We can’t go on the road and let up. We have to keep going hard, like we did here.” ”Does it mean any more that it’s against the Yankees? Had we been playing better, yeah, it would have been huge. But right now we’ve just got to win some games, and it didn’t matter who it was,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. ”It establishes a mood in the clubhouse that, you know what, we’re not that bad.” Since the start of interleague play in 1997, the only Subway Series sweep had been by the Yankees, when they went 6-0 in 2003. This is the second sweep in this series between the two teams. ”It’s hard when you lose to your crosstown rivals,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ”You don’t want to be part of a team that gets swept by your crosstown rivals. Over time, it’s going to happen, but you don’t want to be the team that it happens to.” ”It’s a lot more fun to come to the ballpark. Guys are smiling, laughing, having a good time, playing a little more loosely,” Wright said. When you go out there and you feel like you have to play perfect to win games, that’s when you get a little tense and start making some silly mistakes.” Now the Mets just have to play like this the rest of the time.
