The stats say it all don’t they? So why would the Phillies be interested in Vernon Wells? Well’s who appeared in only 77 games last season with the Angels would come cheap as the Angels are likely to pick up the majority of his contract. Outside of CHEAP, what does Well’s bring to the Phillies? Declining production is what the Phillies will get with the 34-year-old outfielder. Last season in his 77 games, Wells hit 11 home runs and drove in 29 with a .230 batting average. Well’s numbers look quite a bit like John Mayberry Jr’s numbers don’t they? So is this just a rumor with no real truth? I would hope so as Wells has done little since signing the big contract with the Angels. Since signing the big deal Wells has hit .218 and .230 the last two season’s with 36 home runs and 95 rbi. The Phillies who would likely pay less than 6 million of his salary must be thinking he has a shot at rebounding. Is 6 million too much for Wells? I would think so as they let Ibanez walk for far less with similar production. If it were a choice of a platoon of Mayberry and Brown or Wells, I’d stick with what we have and spend the money on pitching.      Similar Posts: Are the Phillies good enough to take back the NL East?
