The Outside Corner:
San Diego Padres
The Arizona Diamondbacks solidified their bullpen at the cost of depleting their major league rotation, sending Ian Kennedy to the San Diego Padres in exchange for reliever Joe Thatcher, minor league prospect Matt Stites, and a competitive balance draft pick.
Kennedy is the biggest name involved in the deal, and while he's not a superstar (contrary to what his 2011 season might tell you), he's a solid return for a couple of relievers. Kennedy still has two more years of arbitration left, and his flyball tendencies should play out well in Petco Park. His strikeout and walk rates have largely been consistent over his four seasons in the desert, but his breakout 2011 was spurred by a drop in home run rate. Getting him into a place where flyballs go to die like Petco (even with the fences moved in) can only help the 28-year old's career going forth. Kennedy has a 5.23 ERA in 124 innings this season along with 108 strikeouts and 48 walks.

Sitting eight games below .500 and five behind trading partner, Arizona, the San Diego Padres added an arm to their rotation.
Ian Kennedy, a former 21-game-winner and before that, a Yankee prospect, now stands with an ugly 3-8 record and 5.23 ERA. He seems to have overstayed his welcome in Arizona, but the Padres will now take a shot on the righty who hails from Southern California...

The trade deadline will be on us at 1 PM Pacific Time and already we've seen the Angels be relatively active in trading Scott Downs and Alberto Callaspo. Alas, those two lesser moves have done nothing to address their pitching concerns or improve the Angels' in a significant way for 2014. There has to be something else coming down the pike, right?
Since I am going to...
The weekend that most people have been looking forward to is upon us. The Yankees are in town to take on your Padres and it should be a pretty good series (I hope). Of course surrounding the Yankees is the talk of Mariano Rivera and his...
