Tribe Happenings: Swisher, Francona bring culture change

In one fell swoop this offseason the Indians have completely changed their organizational culture with the hiring of manager Terry Francona and the signing of outfielder Nick Swisher. Both should have a big impact on the team both on and off the field this season and seasons to come, and Tony talks about the culture change they should bring and the foundation the Indians have set...

Brett Myers acquisition isn’t sexy, but still helps bad Indians rotation

One of the central goals of the Indians’ offseason plans was to improve their dreadful starting rotation from 2012. While the team was expected to be a player for some of the second-tier free agents, the name Brett Myers was a surprise to fans when he inked a one-year, $7 million deal with Cleveland this week. Myers, a 32-year-old who spent 2012 as a reliever with the Astros and...

Numbers show Myers could be a solid addition for Indians

When the IBI's Jeff Ellis first heard that the Indians had signed right-hander Brett Myers his initial response was that he should be a guy who eats innings and not do much else. After spending all of last season in the bullpen Jeff and others kind of overlooked him as a starting option for 2013; however, after Jeff did his usual research he found that Myers could be a pitcher...

Indians may re-sign Travis Hafner to DH

Travis Hafner and the Cleveland Indians may again find themselves together. Despite signing outfielder Nick Swisher and pitcher Brett Myers to contracts the Indians still have a large hole to fill at designated hitter. On Friday, Indians GM Chris Antonetti said that the team could use free agent Travis Hafner to fill their DH spot. Hafner, 35, has spent ten seasons with the Indians...

Indians officially sign Myers, designate Canzler

Free agent right-handed pitcher Brett Myers passed his physical this morning and the Indians officially announced his signing today. He has been signed to a one year $7 million deal and has a club option for 2014 that will pay him $8 million if the Indians pick it up after the season. To make room on the 40-man roster the Indians designated Russ Canzler for assignment.

Myers signs one-year deal with Indians

Right-hander Brett Myers has signed a one-year contract with a club option for 2014 with the Cleveland Indians, the team confirmed Friday in an announcement. It was reported earlier this week that Myers had reach a contract agreement with the Indians. Myers, 32, is expected to bid for a start in the starting rotation this season. He pitched in relief for the Houston Astos and...

Myers provides another option for Cleveland's rotation

The Cleveland Indians' signing of right-hander Brett Myers to a one-year contract gives the team another option for the rotation, which is clearly still a work in progress. The only two spots that are settled are the top two, which belong to Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez. Even those two spots are subject to change, given that Masterson's name has surfaced in trade...

Brett Myers and a look at recent pitchers who have both started and relieved

Brett Myers has agreed in principle, pending a physical, to a deal with the Cleveland Indians as he plans to return to the starting rotation. Myers’ situation was a little odd, as he had always been a starter except for the season he was injured with the Phillies. He returned later that season and relieved, but the following season, he was back in the rotation. He remained a starter...

The IBI's Steve Orbanek recaps all of the night's action as he takes you Around the Farm.

Swisher is going to be tough for Yankees to replace

Under the city lights of New York, Nick Swisher's personality often shined brighter than his performance. The smiling, laughing right fielder was largely overshadowed by the bigger names in the Yankees' lineup, but this winter, the Indians gave Swisher the star treatment and wooed him to Cleveland with a four-year deal. "Where we were going to be wanted and where we...
