Bobby Cox not only knows how to manage a pitching staff, when to hit and run and to let Chipper Jones be Chipper Jones, but he also has some Sherlock Holmes in him.  It was Cox, who spent 23 combined years as the Braves manager sandwiched around five years of being the general manager, who snuffed out an imposter who claimed to be an old Braves coach during an alumni reunion of the weekend.

A middle-aged man claimed to be John Sullivan, a former bullpen coach under Cox during his first stint as Braves manager in the early 1980′s before following him to the Toronto Blue Jays prior to the 1982 season.  Cox asked retired Braves reliever Greg McMichael who the man was and when McMichael told him, “John Sullivan”, Cox smelled a rat.

“That’s not John Sullivan,” Cox said. ”I knew he wasn’t coming.”

It took everyone else to realize that the imposter wasn’t a former player or coach during the reunion softball game.  Craig Skok, a reliever for the Braves from 1978-79, said the middle-aged man “definitely did not look like he ever played the game.”  Andy Ashby, a starting pitcher for the Braves in 2000 told him, ”dude, you’ve really gone downhill fast.”

The faker was eventually confronted by players and he came clean.

But that wasn’t before he wined and dined with former big leaguers and even signed autographs in the real John Sullivan’s #8 Braves jersey.
