Chad Billingsley has battled inconsistency pretty much his entire career. On Friday night, he was given a 5-0 lead in the second inning, but he couldn't hold it, taking the loss as the Los Angeles Dodgers fell 8-5 to the Los Angeles Angels.

"They are a very dangerous lineup. I just didn't get the job done today," Billingsley said.

It continued an up-and-down pattern for Billingsley, who is 4-6 with a 4.15 ERA on the season. He had wins in Philadelphia and Seattle earlier in June that saw him give up one run in seven innings in each game. Over his last two starts, both losses, he's allowed 11 runs in 11 innings.

"We look at the negative with Chad," manager Don Mattingly said. "You get a great game, and a great game, then you get a game where you're like, 'Ugh. What happened?'"

Mattingly pointed out that expectations might be too high for Billingsley, a former first-round draft pick who won 16 games in 2008 and was an All-Star in 2009. Since the 2009 All-Star break, Billingsley is 30-35 with a 4.10 ERA.

The question seems to arise every few starts: Which Billingsley will show up tonight?

"We've talked about this enough that it made me do research. When we started looking at Bills over time, it's pretty damned good," Mattingly said. "It may not be what we think it should be or think it could be, but it's still pretty good."

Since the beginning of the 2008 season, Billingsley is tied for eighth in the National League with 55 wins, and he ranks sixth with 783 strikeouts and seventh with 863 1/3 innings pitched. The question remains, is that good enough?

"I want more, I want him to want more, and I know there's more there," Mattingly said. "It's just a matter of being consistent. At the end of the day, he takes the ball, he's healthy. It depends what you are looking for, you know?"
