Another Cubs Blog:
From last night’s recap:
Bradley looked so disinterested during his second-inning strikeout that Piniella yanked him after the third. Piniella downplayed it afterward, saying it was only a double-switch.
I speak fluent Hobbitese, so I’ll translate this one for all you laymen:
I incorrectly assumed that Milton Bradley was benched for not caring, because I read something negative into everything he does, then write it like that to shape public opinion about Bradley. After the game I asked Lou about this. He looked at me like I was a crazy person, then explained to me how baseball is played in the National League. Because I don’t know how to do my job, you see.
Fixed.
Maybe Bradley is disinterested. I don’t know. I have this terrific inability to access the mind-states of others. Maybe Sully can teach me how. One thing is for sure: we can never accept Sullivan’s version of events in any situation like this, as he’s already admitted, on TV and in print, that he unfairly and negatively slants coverage of players he feels have slighted him. And he mentioned Milton Bradley specifically when he made this admission. So, on the strength of his own words, we have no reason to believe that Paul Sullivan ever tells the truth about Milton Bradley.
What is more, Sullivan once again glosses the fact that the fan reaction to Braldey’s first 2 AB’s last night was so venomous, Lou may have just been doing Milton a solid by getting Milton away from the fuckwads in RF, using a routine double switch to do it. Bradley was booed as loudly and angrily last night as he has been all year; one can only imagine what he was hearing in RF. But far be it from Sullivan to even countenance that suggestion. It likely never entered his tiny hobbit brain, which apparently also cannot contain enough baseball knowledge to recognize a double switch when it happens right in front of him.
After all, Wrigley Field security hasn’t ejected anyone from the RF bleachers for inappropriate comments. Right, Paul?
