Carmona's arrest leaves hole in rotation

The Indians are faced with a potential hole in their starting rotation in the wake of Fausto Carmona's arrest for identity theft on Jan. 19 in the Dominican Republic. Carmona's arrest made his availability for the start of spring training, and perhaps for the start of the regular season, very questionable. Before Carmona's arrest, the Indians appeared to be in a position...

Did Rockies outsmart Twins in Kevin Slowey trade?

Colorado has since traded Slowey for a better relief prospect, but there's more to it than that.

Give new Tribe starter Kevin Slowey a chance with change of scenery - Comment of the Day

"The Twins went 0-14 in Slowey's 8 losses and 6 relief appearances. But before last year, Slowey was a pretty decent pitcher for several years. The guy may have been a clubhouse problem last year, but a team going 0-14 whenever he was on the mound might have led the guy to a breakdown, otherwise it would mean he did not care. Plus, the Twins were missing their regular outfielders...

Today in 1941: Indians’ Bob Feller Highest Paid MLB Player Making $40,000

From the Associated Press via the Tuscaloosa News, we find that Cleveland Indians’ starting pitcher Bob Feller is in fact still the highest paid player in the game despite some consternation surrounding said topic.  Coincidentally, this January 23, 1941 report arrives in the column next to a report surrounding the wife of George Herman “Babe” Ruth stating that...

Rockies get Scutaro from Red Sox

The Colorado Rockies have acquired infielder Marco Scutaro from the Boston Red Sox for right-hander Clayton Mortensen. The 36-year-old Scutaro hit a career-high .299 for the Red Sox last year, when he had 26 doubles, seven homers, 54 RBIs and a .358 on-base percentage. He was projected as Boston's starting shortstop but will play second base and bat second in Colorado, where...

Carlos Santana Player Projection No. 80

Key Stats: Carlos Santana is currently the first catcher off the boards in early mock drafts going in the 2nd or 3rd round. He has displayed power at every step of his young career and also shown an ability to hit for average, so the abysmal .239 he hit last year can safely be dismissed as a young player adjusting. Despite that he still pounded 25 HR's and 79 RBI's on fairly...

Mariners sign P Millwood to minor league deal

The Seattle Mariners signed veteran righthander Kevin Millwood to a minor league contract. The 37-year-old Millwood spent most of last season in the minors before he was signed by the Colorado Rockies. He made nine starts over the final two months, posting a 4.3 record and 3.98 ERA. Millwood has started over 30 games in 10 seasons, but he had a dreadful year in 2010 with the Baltimore...

Carmona points out an MLB inequity

Goodbye Fausto! Hello Roberto! As reported last week, 28-year-old Fausto Carmona is Roberto Hernandez Heredia and perhaps 31 years old. There are implications here for Carmona-Heredia, for the Indians and, most importantly, for professional baseball and the uneven way it deals with international players. Since being released on bail, The Sinkerballer Formally Known as Fausto has...
