Joe: We have gathered here today to discuss the Cleveland Indians starting pitching staff. Who are these people, where did they come from, what are they doing here? To start who is the ace? Mike: What a hanging curve ball of a question! It has to be Justin Masterson. He cut his HR/FB rate nearly in half at the same time his K/9 rate fell. Which meant that opposing batters weren't hitting the ball hard off him. Joe: I agree, Masterson was absolutely phenomenal last season and deserved more credit than he got from the rest of the league. In fact the only reason there is any question as to who is the ace is that the rest of baseball thinks it should be the Tribe's number two pitcher, Ubaldo Jimenez. Mike: Ugh. I hope whatever Ubaldo's mechanical flaws were the past year and a half have been worked out this winter in the Dominican. Manny Acta said they were. What is the likely hood that Josh Tomlin opens the season at #2 and Ubaldo at #3? Joe: I prefer Ubaldo at two ...

Cleveland Indians Sign SS Asdrubal Cabrera for One Year, $4.55 Million

With the player’s arbitration day looming, the Cleveland Indians have signed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to a one-year contract worth $4.55 million. The Indians were reportedly in talks with Cabrera for a multi-year deal, but apparently could not lock up the 2011 Silver Slugger winner beyond his current club control status. Cabrera had reportedly asked for $5.2 million with...

Tribe Happenings: Chisenhall may start season in minors

Barring some injuries, it looks like Chisenhallis ticketed for the minors (Photo: AP).Some news, notes, and thoughts from my Indians notebook…Chisenhall’s no sure thingI’ve heard a lot of discussion that one of the position battles that bears watching this spring is at third base between Lonnie Chisenhall and Jack Hannahan. While it is technically true that the third base starter...

Setting the Lines for the 2012 Indians

I like very much when people take firm and decisive stands on things.  For example, “I don’t drink. It’s against my religion.” Or “I’m a vegetarian; it’s the only ethical stance to take.” Or “I believe that Gremlins are real and breeding in the sewers of Montreal.” I bring this up not because I am one of these principled folks—only that I admire them.  For...

Asdrubal Cabrera, Indians agree at 4.55 million

CLEVELAND (AP) -- All-Star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to a 4.55 million, one-year contract and avoided salary arbitration. The agreement Friday was 75,000 above the midpoint between the 5.2 million he had asked for in arbitration last month and the 3.75 million the Indians had offered. A hearing had been scheduled for next week. Cleveland&...

Player Profile #59: Shin-Soo Choo | OF | CLE

Shin-Soo Choo‘s 2011 season was most certainly a down year from his very consistent numbers from 2009-10. Choo was almost a lock for a .300 batting average, 20 homers, 20 steals and 80+ RBI and runs every season, which put him right around a top 10 outfielder. Unfortunately off-field issues and injuries made it difficult for Choo to repeat those numbers in 2011. His .259...

Keith Law Ranks Francisco Lindor 35th Among All MLB Prospects

ESPN’s resident prospect guru has released his Top 100 list for 2012 and the Cleveland Indians have a lone representative among a list featuring names like Mike Trout and Bryce Harper.  Francisco Lindor, the team’s first-round draft selection in 2011 slots in 35th overall, apparently being weighed down by the fact that he’s only 19-years of age. Per Law: The Puerto...

Reviewing the Indians offseason

Grady Sizemore (Photo: AP)This time of year, fans are bundled up in warm clothes and blankets, watching the snow fall as they anxiously await the arrival of spring training. Although Old Man Winter’s wrath will still be felt in Cleveland in mid-February, in Goodyear, Arizona, home of the Indians spring training facilities, it will be baseball season. The sound of bats hitting...

Indians, Clippers Set Killer Bobblehead Slate for 2012

During the 2011 season, the Cleveland Indians bailed on bobblheads, claiming that attendance studies did not support the cost incurred by curating the sub-foot figurines.  While a Mike Hargrove “Human Rain Delay” bobble saw the light of day, that would be it for what would ultimately be a fun year in Wahoo Country.  But for 2012, bobbleheads are back. And in a very...

Rockies don't hold the aces in 2012 with Jimenez gone and De La Rosa hurt

Anchored by ace Ubaldo Jimenez and stoked by the bright promise of lefty Jorge De La Rosa, the Rockies were the preseason toast of baseball. A promising, perhaps even excellent rotation, made a National League West title seem quite plausible.

Around the Horn: Indians infielders

The Indians believe that strength up the middle is integral to a team's success. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and second baseman Jason Kipnis represent an important part of that equation for the upcoming season.

As usual, Cleveland avoids arbitration | Baseball

Arbitration season for Cleveland ended Friday like each of the past 21, without the participation of the Indians. The team signed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to a one-year contract worth $4.55 million.
