Cleveland, OH -- Michael Bourn hit his second leadoff home run of the season off Texas ace Yu Darvish andJustin Masterson struck out eight as the Cleveland Indians beat the Rangers 1-0 Saturday night at Progressive Field. Darvish (9-5, 2.80), coming off a two-hit, no-run performance after a stint on the disabled list, was as good as advertised, striking out 11 Indians, but the early mistake doomed him against an even better Masterson. "I didn't want him to get ahead too deep into the count," Bourn said. "I know how tough he is." After taking ball one, Bourn was looking for an early fastball and took advantage, lining Darvish's 1-0 pitch just over the wall in right field. The homer was Bourn's second in three games and his fourth of the season. "I heard a lot about him," Bourn said. "I believe the hype." Signed in the offseason to be a catalyst at the top of the lineup, Bourn has hit in five games in a row while driving in eight run...

Masterson Leads Tribe To 13th Shutout in Ace Battle

Justin Masterson has had some mixed results this season in “big” games. Still, the All-Star righty came up big in a Saturday night showdown with fellow All-Star Yu Darvish. Masterson went 7 2/3 innings, scattering five hits and one walk and one hitter batter while striking out eight as Michael Bourn’s leadoff homer held up for a 1-0 Tribe victory. The games in the last two...

Cleveland Indians: Tom Hamilton is the best announcer in baseball

It is a known fact across the web that Tom Hamilton has the best home run call in the majors. The Voice of the Cleveland Indians is in his 23rd year of calling the Tribe games from the radio booth for WTAM 1100. In his 23 years, Hamilton has called 68 postseason games for the Tribe including all six games from the 1995 World Series and all seven games from the 1997 World Series...

AZL Indians rally late to beat AZL Reds 5-3 in extras

GOODYEAR – The AZL Indians opened the second half of the AZL season Friday night by snapping their three game losing streak, as they rallied past their complex rival AZL Reds 5-3 in 10 innings.  After coming back to tie the game in the late innings, the Tribe got a boost they desperately needed from LeVon Washington, who smacked a two-run blast in the top of the 10th inning...

International Report: Indians continue to add talent

The Indians have been quite busy on the international signing front over the past month plus. Back in early June the Indians signed shortstop Yu Chen-Chang out of Taiwan, followed that up with two splashes at the start of the International Signing Period on July 2nd by inking shortstop Willy Castro and outfielder Junior Soto out of the Dominican Republic, and then just a few days...

Escobar dominates as Aeros fall 2-0

AKRON, OH -- Akron Aeros starter Paolo Espino rebounded into form Sunday after struggling mightily in his last two starts. Unfortunately for Espino and the Aeros, the Richmond Flying Squirrels and Edwin Escobar were even better. The Aeros (53-55) fell to the Flying Squirrels (50-58) 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Canal Park as they split the four-game homestand with Richmond. Despite...

Raburn’s Walkoff Blast Overcomes Blown Six-Run Lead

Last night, the Indians were in danger of giving away another game to the Tigers after having lead 7-1 after four innings and handing over a four-run lead to their bullpen to start the seventh inning. However, on the strength of Chris Perez and Bryan Shaw holding serve in the 9th and extras, Ryan Raburn turned an initial bunt situation into a 3-run bomb to the home run porch in left...

Antonetti talks trade deadline, bullpen

CLEVELAND -- Think bullpen for the Indians as baseballs July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaches.General Manager Chris Antonetti didnt come out and say exactly that Friday before the Indians played Texas, but he may as well have.Antonetti said hes pleased with the way the starting pitchers have thrown lately and happy with the offense and defense -- he called the defensive struggles...

The Reinvention of Carlos Santana

Regular readers to Burning River Baseball know that I have always been bearish on Carlos Santana. Whether it was missing a week of games last season due to getting hit in the catcher's mask by a line drive or lazy attempts to block balls in the dirt, I have always felt as if he has not lived up to his "top prospect" status. This may be relying too much on subjective...

Columbus, Bauer fall 4-2 to Bulls

COLUMBUS- The Clippers looked poised to make a comeback in the bottom of the eighth but a twin killing destroyed the rally and Columbus eventually fell to the Durham Bulls 4-2 Saturday. First baseman Chun-Hsiu Chen blasted a near-home run off the right field wall but it turned into a long single. Designated hitterJeremy Hermida then singled to right to put two runners on with...

Trens Spotting: Bullpen problems and avoiding risk (Garza)

It is 7-1, Kluber is pitching well as usual, the Tribe seems to be rolling, winning a very important first game of the series. This is exactly the shot in the arm they needed, a big win making it two in a row, and then all of the sudden it happened. The Tribe had to go to the bullpen. Yes they had a four run lead with three innings to play, and yes it was against a middle of the...

2013 Fantasy Baseball, The Fielding Edge: Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Indians

Author’s Note: This is the sixth edition of a seven part series on fielding, and how it could affect your fantasy team and the trade deadline. We are profiling the top two teams in each division because those are the teams most likely to deal for players to help them down the stretch. During the process, we will discuss some fairly complex topics as it pertains to fielding. If...

Rangers-Indians preview

It's been 33 years since the Cleveland Indians swept a three-game series with the Texas Rangers in town. It's been 40 since they rolled off five straight wins over the Rangers in one season. Cleveland could change both Sunday by extending its longest home winning streak in two seasons to seven. After Ryan Raburn delivered a walkoff three-run homer in Friday's 11-8, 11...

Rangers lose game on first batter

One pitch. That was the difference in tonight’s game. Michael Bourn hit a home run off Yu Darvish in the first at bat of the night.  And that was the only run of the entire game.  For either team. If we’d known that would be it, maybe we could have just saved the pitchers and players some energy and called the game. Ugh. Can you tell I’m a little disenchanted with this team...

Game 2013.104: Phillies at Tigers

58-45, 1st place, 3 games up on Cleveland. I said Friday’s game was a good win. You know, I think I like 10-0 even better. Check this out: 5 AL Central teams gave up a combined total of 1 run yesterday. KC spoiled the party by scoring a run against the White Sox. Cleveland beat Yu Darvish and the Rangers 1-0. We’re not worried about the Indians, of course. But we should be. From...
