Found August 03, 2012 on The Outside Corner:
This is the time of year where aging, struggling veterans get kicked to the curb by their teams. It's already happened multiple times this week with Hideki Matsui, Derek Lowe, and Bobby Abreu. Now, two days after designating Lowe, the Indians are at it again, designating Johnny Damon for assignment. The Indians signed Damon a month into the year and threw him into left field, where he looked done as a player. In 64 games for Cleveland this year, Damon hit just .222 with a pathetic .610 OPS. His power and speed looked completely gone after homering just four times and only stealing four bases after a total of 24 homers and 30 steals over the last two years in Detroit and Tampa Bay. Damon had played more in the outfield this year over 64 games than he did in the last two years (and 295 games) with the Tigers and Rays, when he totaled just 352 1/3 innings in comparison to 396 this year. Who knows if that had much to do with his hitting, but if Damon couldn't play the...

Slumping Indians cut Johnny Damon

Johnny Damon has been cut by the Cleveland Indians after he struggled through 64 games with his new team. Damon, designated for assignment on Friday, signed with Cleveland on April 17 but hit only .222 with four home runs. The Indians recalled outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from Triple-A Columbus. The 38-year-old Damon has spent most of his career with Kansas City, Boston and the...

Johnny Damon is looking for a job: Did we blow it by getting Ichiro?

Yesterday, the Indians waived Johnny Damon. The great Johnny Damon. The great Yankee, Johnny Damon. In a perfect world, we would sign him. Correction: In a perfect world, he would have never been stuck in Cleveland. Johnny was hitting .222 with 4 home runs. That's not Johnny Damon. That's Lenn Sakata. It looks like it could be the end. Not only that, but he joins Bobby...

Damon Designated for Assignment; Carrera Recalled

From the Indians: “The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has recalled OF EZEQUIEL CARRERA from the Triple-A Columbus Clippers. To allow room on the 25-man roster the Indians have designated OF JOHNNY DAMON for assignment. Carrera, 25, has spent the entire 2012 season to date with Columbus where he hit .294 (116-394) with 65 runs scored, 19 doubles, 6 triples, 6 home runs...

MLB Report: Indians Designate Lowe for Assignment

Derek Lowe has pitched himself out of the Indians’ rotation and off the team. Following Wednesday night’s loss to the Royals, the Indians designated Lowe for assignment. Being called up to join the rotation is Corey Kluber. Lowe started the season strong, but has had a brutal two months. Tuesday’s poor outing was apparently the last straw- “Lowe — acquired in an offseason...

Abreu & Damon DFA

A little over a week ago Hideki Matsui was designated for assignment by the Rays. Now, two other former Yankees have met the same fate, Johnny Damon and Bobby Abreu. Damon was DFA by the Indians yesterday:On Friday, August 3 the Cleveland Indians said farewell to veteran outfielder Johnny Damon, designating him for assignment. Like MLB.com's Jordan Bastian noted in his coverage...

Indians designate Derek Lowe for assignment

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians designated Derek Lowe for assignment Wednesday night, one day after the veteran right-hander was shelled by Kansas City. Lowe gave up seven runs on eight hits, two walks and a balk over 2 1-3 innings in Cleveland's 8-3 loss Tuesday night. He had lost four straight, had a 15.88 ERA in his last three starts and an 8.80 ERA in his...

Report: Derek Lowe Would Love Red Sox Reunion, Just Needs a 'Tune-Up'

Many Red Sox fans' minds probably began to wander upon hearing that Derek Lowe had been designated for assignment by the Indians. While it's unclear if Boston is interested in bringing back the 39-year-old, who played with the club from 1997-2004, Lowe certainly seems open to the idea. According to The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, Lowe said he just needs a "tune...

Potential Red Sox Reunion With Derek Lowe Could End Up Making Sense for Both Sides

We were nearing the end of Red Sox Final on Wednesday night when an interesting tidbit came across The Edge, NESN's ubiquitous bottom-of-the-screen ticker: "Cleveland Indians designate Derek Lowe for assignment." Hmmm... Lowe, now 39 years old, has struggled mightily for the Indians of late. He's 0-3 with a 15.88 ERA in his last three starts after getting pounded...

8/3 Game Recap: Indians - Tigers

Roster Update: In the second incredibly intelligent move in the past week, the Indians cut the waste of space/money/time that was Johnny Damon to make room for Ezequiel Carrera, who legitamately should have been on this team since day one after his impressive season in 2011. Carrera will likely split time with Shelley Duncan and Brent Lillibridge in left field and possibly spell...

Derek Lowe Designated for Assignment by Cleveland Indians

Former Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe has been designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians. After beginning the season strong, the 39-year-old sinkerballer has faltered down the stretch. Once 6-1 with a league-leading 2.05 ERA, Lowe is now 8-10 with a 5.52 ERA. His last time out, he only lasted 2 1/3 innings while giving up seven earned runs to the Royals. According to the team...

Is There A Derek Lowe Reunion Looming?

In 2004, Derek Lowe and Theor Epstein shared a World Series title Together. 8 years later, Theo’s successor has a chance to bring Lowe back. Should he? On August 1st, former Red Sox starter Derek Lowe was designated for assignment from the Cleveland Indians.  Along with Jason Varitek, Lowe was sent to the Red sox on July 31st 1997 for closer Heathcliff Slocumb, who went on to...

Indians DFA Derek Lowe

As a Braves fan, this amuses me way more than it should. The Indians have designated starting pitcher Derek Lowe for assignment. Lowe was acquired by the Indians from the Braves this past offseason in essentially a salary dump, with Atlanta picking up $10 million of Lowe's $15 million salary in 2012, the final year of a four year pact he signed with the Braves prior to the...

Is Derek Lowe returning to the Boston Red Sox?

Rumors are swirling as I write that it is quite possible that Derek Lowe, designated for assignment today by the Cleveland Indians, could very well be wearing the Sox uniform again. Lowe 39, started the season 6-1 with a 3.09 ERA in his first 11 starts but has struggled since the All-Star break, going 0-3 with an ERA of 15.88, hefty numbers for a man making $15 million this year...

The Nats Shouldn't Sign Derek Lowe

Starting pitcher Derek Lowe was designated for assignment by the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night, paving the way for other teams around the league to make a move to grab him. In case you're not familiar with what happens after a player has been DFA'd, within the next 10 days, the Indians have to trade or release the veteran righty who is due $15 million this season....
