As the Red Sox travel away from the confines of Fenway Park for a short three-game road trip, they likely do so with heavy hearts. However, with tributes to the Boston Marathon tragedy coming in from around the world, the Cleveland Indians are also showing due respect as they welcome the Red Sox to Progressive Field. As noted by multiple Red Sox beat writers, the flag in center field at the Cleveland ballpark has been lowered to half-mast, honoring Boston and the loss the city has suffered. Evan Drellich of MassLive.com says the heel soreness is considered mild, but it is a setback nonetheless.  The Red...

What to make of Mike Carp's big night at plate for Red Sox

After riding the bench the first two weeks of the season, Mike Carp was inserted into the starting lineup for first time on Wednesday night in Cleveland and didn’t disappoint. In three at bats he got on base all three times via three extra base hits including two doubles and an RBI triple. It was the first time in his career that he had two doubles in a game. Despite having...

Napoli gives Red Sox a happy holiday

Mike Napoli drove in the winning run with a two-out double in the ninth inning and the Boston Red Sox completed a three-game sweep of the light-hitting Tampa Bay Rays with a 3-2 win on Monday. The Rays had two hits before finally showing some offensive punch in the ninth when Desmond Jennings led off with a single, stole second and scored the tying run on a single by Ben Zobrist...

Jackie Robinson Day – Heightened Alert After Incident In Boston

I was about to start working on an article about Jackie Robinson when I received word that there had been 2 explosions at the Boston Marathon. There have been no reports of any threats to any areas outside of Boston, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has put the public on heightened alert. The Dodgers have a highly visible presence of LAPD officers at every game. ...

In light of the tragic events that befell our community yesterday, the Boston Red Sox will postpone tomorrow's Open House at Fenway Park. The free event was to provide an opportunity during school vacation week for families and children to wander the concourses, see displays, and stroll on the warning track.  It will be rescheduled for later this season. "We all personally...

Red Sox’ Strong Bullpen Enables Team to Grind Out Wins, Which Was Needed in Victory Over Indians

The game was slowly slipping away from the Red Sox. Alfredo Aceves had just given up back-to-back home runs, and the Indians, who once looked down and out, were on the verge of seizing control. Enter the Red Sox’ bullpen. With the game hanging in the balance, Junichi Tazawa came on in relief and retired three straight hitters in the sixth inning, keeping the Red Sox’ lead intact...

Indians trade Eric Berger to Houston

The Cleveland Indians traded AA starting pitcher, Eric Berger (he of the infamous mustache) to Houston today in exchange for catcher Chris Wallace. This was a move that was made in response to the lack of catching depth in Akron and Columbus due to the injuries to Lou Marson (neck), Carlos Santana (thumb) and  Alex Laviski (toe). According to the Houston Astros media guide,...

Kevin Youkilis Says Hearing of Boston Marathon Tragedy ‘Ate Me Up’

Teams across Major League Baseball showed their support for Boston on Tuesday night with thoughtful gestures. But for a few members of opposing teams, the somber moments weren’t just for the Red Sox and their fans — they also helped those who once played in Boston and still hold the city close to their hearts. Indians manager Terry Francona and Yankees third baseman Kevin Youkilis...

The weekend brought a fresh series and a fresh start for the Indians. Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 4/17
