DETROIT -- The day started with a starting pitcher placed on the disabled list. It continued with a pitcher facing a suspension getting lit up in his return from the minors. And it ended with another loss.Saturdays was 6-4 to the Tigers, the Indians sixth in a row and fourth in a row to Detroit.Except in this one the Indians showed signs that they just might be moving toward getting over the hump.Lame as it sounds, they were, as Nick Swisher said, right there. Were competing, manager Terry Francona said. The results just arent there right now.And the results are what matters. Its a win-lose business. Its a frustrating time, man, a super-frustrating time for everybody, Swisher said. The day started with the Indians placing right-handed starter Zac McAllister on the 15-day disabled list with a middle finger sprain. McAllister said he noticed the problem after his last start, though he did not throw a curveball in his last outing. The team was concerned enough about it to send McAllister back to Cleveland for an MRI.Finger injuries to pitchers are never good. The Indians attribute it to McAllister using too tight a grip when he throws a curveball. With the Indians finger injuries to pitchers raise red flags, with memories of Adam Miller and Alex White lingering.Thats why were putting him on the disabled list, Francona said. We dont want it to get to a point where it (becomes) something it shouldnt become. If we need to be overly cautious, we will be.McAllister will return as soon as hes ready, but the typical timetable for his injury is anywhere from two weeks to a month. With him out, the Indians recalled Carlos Carrasco from AAA to face the Tigers. It didnt go well, as Carrasco left after giving up a leadoff double in the fifth with the Tigers leading 6-1.Carrasco must serve an eight-game suspension, and though the Indians werent saying it it seems likely Carrasco drops his appeal and start serving his time on Sunday. With an off day Thursday, the Indians could then keep the starting rotation in line, with Carrasco returning June 18.That seems pretty secondary at the moment, though, as the Indians continue to struggle to win. Theyve lost six in a row and 14 of the last 18, and theyre feeling it.But they showed some fight. Down 6-1, the Indians got back in the game with a run in the fifth and a two-run home run by Ryan Raburn in the seventh. In the ninth, they got two on with one out against the unpredictable Jose Valverde, but Raburn and Mike Aviles ended the game on check-swing strikeouts on offspeed pitches that looked like balls.Yes, the Indians had Jason Giambi on the bench to pinch-hit, but the Tigers also had lefty Drew Smyly warming up and Giambi had only seen Smyly once. Francona said Sandy Alomar Jr. (who took over after Franconas baffling ejection) liked the chances better with Aviles against Valverde.Swisher had two line drives to the outfield that were caught that would have been doubles had they landed 10 feet either way (yes, it would have been lovely in Johnstown without the rain too) and in the seventh Carlos Santana and Aviles both had 415-foot outs to the cavern in Comerica Parks center field.I thought we had a lot of loud contact today, Francona said. They were one hit from tying the game, just as they have been in the last four losses, which have come by three, one, two and two runs. But the Indians also had some early problems, and falling behind early has been a constant in this losing streak. In the six losses, the Indians have been outscored 26-2 in the first three innings, and have fallen behind 4-0, 4-1, 4-0, 6-0, 5-0 and 6-1.Thats a hard way to play, Francona said. And win.
