According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Cleveland Indians join the Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs as the teams expressing interest in free agent right-hander Mitchell Boggs. Mitchell Boggs attracting interest from #Phillies, #Indians, #Mariners, #Cubs & #Mets. Had a 2.28 ERA & 6.9 H/9 IP in 2012. Intriguing guy — Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) December 11, 2013 The 6-foot-4-inch Boggs was non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies in the beginning of December after he posted an 8.10 ERA this past season between St. Louis and Colorado. The 29-year-old was one of the top setup men in baseball in 2012, recording 34 holds in 73 1/3 innings, and was named to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. He would, however, fall apart when the Cardinals tried him at closer in 2013, walking 20 batters and allowing 28 hits in 23 1/3 innings. A sinker-slider pitcher, Boggs tops out in the low-to-mid 90s. He doesn’t miss many bats, his sinker resulting in a swinging strike rate of just 6.1 percent in 2013, but relies on ground ball outs. The Indians, looking for bullpen help in the wake of Chris Perez’ release and Joe Smith leaving in free agency, would have to assume that Boggs’ control issues were an anomaly if they were to offer him a contract.
