The Cleveland Indians have placed All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera on the bereavement list after a death in the family.
The team said Cabrera has returned to his native Venezuela after the death in his immediate family. He must be on the list for a minimum of three days.
The Indians recalled left-hander Nick Hagadone from Triple-A Columbus before opening a three-game series in Seattle.
Cabrera is batting .282 with two homers and three RBI. The 26-year-old hit 25 homers -- the most by a Cleveland shortstop -- and drove in 92 runs in 2011. He recently signed a new three-year extension that will keep him with the Indians through 2014.
Hagadone pitched in nine games for Cleveland last season. He's had four scoreless relief appearances for the Clippers this season.

On Justin Masterson, Again
If you forced me to guess, I would say that I’ve probably written more words about Justin Masterson than about any other human being on the face of the planet. Which is kind of weird for me to acknowledge, considering I’ve written a freaking master’s thesis and am, as Denny would say, “allegedly educated”.
But when you consider that I write mostly about baseball these...
Indians hoping power surge lasts a while
The Indians came into the season believing the strength of the team would be their pitching staff. Nine games into the season that's the way it has played out, although the work of the pitchers was somewhat overshadowed by the hitters in the Indians' three-game weekend sweep in Kansas City.
The Indians scored 32 runs and batted .333 while collecting nine doubles and seven...
Mariners 4 Indians 1: Lowe Wild, Offense Sinks Back to Earth
When the Indians took the field in search of their fifth straight win to take on the Seattle Mariners, things immediately looked different. First and foremost, The Grinder Eric Wedge sent lefty Jason Vargas out to the hill and as we know, left-handed starters, no matter how good they are, have been known to give the Wahoos problems. Acta countered by using as right-handed heavy...

Lowe, Indians split series in Settle
SEATTLE (AP) -- Jason Vargas zipped through the Cleveland lineup and the top of the lineup provided just enough pop.
