CLEVELAND (AP) -- Rookie Hector Santiago allowed just one hit in seven shutout innings as the Chicago White Sox kept their slim playoff hopes alive -- for the moment -- with an 11-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday night.
Santiago (4-1), who began the season as Chicago's closer, struck out a season-high 10. The Indians' only hit off the left-hander was Shin-Soo Choo's two-out single in the third.
With just their third win in 13 games, the second-place White Sox remained in contention in the AL Central pending the outcome of Detroit's game in Kansas City. A win by the first-place Tigers will eliminate the White Sox, who collapsed down the stretch after being in first place in the division for 63 straight days.
The White Sox scored four runs in the sixth off Corey Kluber (2-5), and added six in the ninth to end any doubt.
Dayan Viciedo hit his first career grand slam in the ninth to make it 11-0.
After lining up and slapping high-fives in the infield, the ...

The Indians had just two games left entering last night’s tilt. You know how on those day games before a team hits the road for a long trip, they usually swing the bats as if they can’t wait to get out of town? Well both the Indians and the White Sox spent last night playing like it was one of those times. “Getaway Day At-bats” littered this game.
The Sox starter Jake Peavy...
The declining attendance at US Cellular Field has reached a new low. For the first time since 2004 the Chicago White Sox had less then two million fans pass though the turnstiles. With an average home attendance of 24,666 the White Sox ranked 24th in all of baseball.
The White Sox had 16 crowds of 30,000-plus fans and 14 with less than 20,000.
“We’re happy they came out,” White...
In Paul Hoynes’ PD notebook last night, he shared what might be the most outrageous story in the Indians manager vacancy news cycle:
One more candidate: Former Tribe slugger Albert Belle said he threw his hat into the ring with an email to President Mark Shapiro asking for an managerial interview.
“I’m just like Robin Ventura and Mike Matheny were last year,” said Belle...
I’ve had the pleasure 1 of recapping several of Corey Kluber’s starts this season. For nearly six innings tonight, it was his best start of the season by far as he held the potent White Sox offense in check. But, those pesky pale hosers broke through with two outs in the sixth and struck for four runs. The Tribe had no answer for that, mustering just two hits of their own, as...
Closer Chris Perez wants the Indians' next manager to match his passion and intensity.
Perez said Tuesday that while he personally likes Manny Acta, he disagreed with the fired manager's laid-back approach.
The right-hander thinks both leading candidates for the permanent job, interim manager Sandy Alomar Jr., and former Boston Red Sox skipper Terry Francona would be a...
A no-decision with very little run support? It could only be a Jake Peavy start for the Chicago White Sox. And very likely the last one he makes in that uniform. Peavy went eight innings Tuesday in Chicago's eventual 4-3, 12-inning loss to the Cleveland Indians, and he allowed three runs on three hits. Bigger picture? The free-agent-to-be showed this season that all the health...
The White Sox have completely collapsed, a huge part of which was the Indians last series win over Chicago. Unless both Cleveland and Detroit get swept this week, the Sox are officially out of the playoffs in 2012.
The Indians seem to have a newfound motivation with the introduction of Sandy Alomar, Jr. as manager. This team, which has struggled all season scoring runs, has...
Their clubhouse strewn with boxes, their season on the brink of ending after a 10th loss in 12 games, the Chicago White Sox headed out Sunday on their final road trip.
They had hoped the three games in Cleveland would be a time for celebration instead of reflecting on what went so wrong.
Now they need a lot of help and a three-game winning streak.
Travis Hafner likely will play his last game in a Cleveland Indians uniform Wednesday night. On Tuesday night, Hafner hit what might be his last home run for Cleveland, making him one of the heroes in the Indians' 4-3, 12-inning win over the Chicago White Sox. With the Indians trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hafner, entering the game as a pinch hitter, hit...
Francisco Lindor is the Cleveland Indians’ shortstop of the future and the top prospect in the system. At the age of 18, he also likely several years away from the big leagues. Drafted eighth overall in 2011, the switch-hitting native of Puerto Rico spent the season with low-A Lake County where he hit .257/.352/.355. An outstanding defensive infielder, he is rated by Baseball America...
Offense! There was plenty of it today as the Indians took out some frustration on perhaps their favorite pitcher to tee off on in the AL, Luke Hochevar. Ten different Indians collected a hit as the Tribe bounced the Royals 15-3. Asdrubal Cabrera, Lou Marson, and Jack Hannahan each had three hits, and Cabrera drove in four with his grand slam in the 5th inning. Zach McAllister went...
Robin Ventura made it clear Sunday: The first-year manager plans on being around for the remaining two years on his contract with the Chicago White Sox.
He raised a few eyebrows Saturday when asked if he could ever see himself managing as long as a Walter Alston or Tommy Lasorda. Ventura said he couldn't and was just hoping to get through this season.
He clarified his answer...
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Asdrubal Cabrera capped a 10-run fifth inning with a grand slam and the Cleveland Indians routed the Kansas City Royals 15-3 Sunday.
Zach McAllister (6-8) pitched five-hit ball over 6 2-3 innings, allowing three runs as Cleveland improved to 2-1 with interim manager Sandy Alomar Jr.
Royals starter Luke Hochevar (8-16) was tagged for nine runs over 4 2-3 innings...
Yesterday, Hector Santiago went 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 1 walk, 10 Ks. Hey, it’s the White Sox closer from 6 months ago, with that gig lasting for a minute. Not an Urbandictionary minute, which is a long time. An actual minute. (Member the Closepocalypse? What a exciting time to be alive.) By making Santiago the closer, Robin Ventura was taking precedent from Ozzie and...
