The Cleveland Indians brought back Jim Thome last season. However, they have no plans to reunite with Manny Ramirez. General manager Chris Antonetti said Friday he doesn't see a fit with his club and Ramirez, who recently applied for reinstatement to Major League Baseball after he was suspended 100 games for failed drug tests. Ramirez spent eight seasons with Cleveland before leaving as a free agent in 2000. Antonetti, who has been looking to add a big bat to a team that contended for much of 2011 before fading in September, said Ramirez is ''probably not the best positional fit for us.'' Last season, the Indians traded for Thome, bringing the franchise home run leader back for the final five weeks. Thome has since signed with the Phillies. The Indians remain interested in acquiring a first baseman. Carlos Pena and Casey Kotchman are potential free agent targets.

Indians' Hafner must reach into his past

The 2012 season will be an important one for Travis Hafner, as it could be his last as a member of the Indians. The 34-year-old designated hitter is entering the last year of a four-year 57 million contract. Hafner will make 13 million in 2012. The Indians hold a 13 million club option for 2013. The buyout on the option year is 2.75 million. Hafner signed that contract in July...

Report: Indians One Of Six Teams With Interest In Yoenis Cespedes

According to a report from Dionisio Soldevila of ESPN Deportes, the Cleveland Indians are one of six teams showing interest in Cuban defector Yoenis Cespedes. Cespedes is an OF prospect who projects as a center-fielder with above average power. He is believed to be 26 years old. I say believed to be, because as we’ve seen with prospects coming out of Cuba, you can sometimes...

Jim Thome Will Get More Time At First Base Than First Expected

Jim Thome, at 41 years-old, is in the best shape of his life. Perhaps in better shape than most younger players in the league today. It's pretty amazing to think that a guy who has had so many health problems when the Phillies traded him to the White Sox seven years ago, could be in such great shape today. Maybe it was the journey of chasing 600 home runs. Whatever is causing...

Are the Cleveland Indians Interested in Carlos Pena?

According to MLB.com, the Cleveland Indians have expressed major interest in slugging first basemen Carlos Pena. Pena is already making 5 million in 2012 from the Chicago Cubs, so it might be smart to offer him a 1 year deal around 6-7 million. That would be a base of 12 million for the year, and easily doable for any team looking to add some pop. The Indians aren’t the best...

Today, the Cleveland Indians announced an addition to their coaching staff by adding the recently retired Adam Everett as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations. Per the team, Everett will be in uniform through most of spring training and will be active in infield instruction and player and staff development for both Major and Minor League camps in Goodyear, Arizona.  Once the...

Spring (Training) is in the Air

At 10:00 this morning, in Goodyear, Arizona, the team shop at Goodyear Ballpark opened, full of new 2012 merchandise for the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians. Living in Goodyear and being an Indians fan, this was a big deal to me. I could not wait to go there and check out the new items. Spring Training is just around the corner, and before we know it, players will be starting...

Adam Everett, who played 34 games with the Indians last year, is back in uniform for the Tribe, but not as a player. The Indians announced that they hired the longtime infielder as a special assistant to baseball operations. He’ll instruct infielders at the Indians’ Major League and minor league camps this Spring Training and provide infield instruction and evaluation during...

Hoynes: Indians Covet Carlos Pena, Need Ownership Approval

Per The Plain Dealer’s Paul Hoynes, the Cleveland Indians front office feels that veteran slugger Carlos Pena could be the answer to their gaping hole at first base.  The only issue, which has historically been a big one, is the ownership team’s willingness to provide the funds to acquire a non-basement-level free agent. Hoynes states that Chris Antonetti and Company...

Report: Indians Will Not Pursue Manny Ramirez

Despite the ongoing search for a middle-of-the-order, power bat – one that is preferably right-handed – to help boost run production for the 2012 season, Cleveland Indians general manager Chris Antonetti reportedly went on record to say that the team will not look to add former Indians outfielder Manny Ramirez. Ramirez decided to walk away from the game of baseball in...
