Michael Brantley had a pair of hits during a seven-run first inning, and the Cleveland Indians roughed up Luke Hochevar before knocking him from the game in an 8-3 victory Friday that spoiled the Royals' home opener. Shin-Soo Choo and Jason Kipnis each drove in a pair as the Indians scored more times in the opening inning than they had in any of their first five games. Asdrubal Cabrera added a solo homer in the ninth for good measure. The seven runs allowed by Hochevar (1-1) in the first inning matched the number of runs that Kansas City starters had allowed during a six-game road trip to begin the season. Derek Lowe (2-0) allowed three runs on 11 hits while surviving 6 2-3 innings for Cleveland.

White Sox, 10 Indians 6: The Johnny Damon/Dan Wheeler Watch is On

If I told you that the Indians offense would put up six runs on 10 hits and Justin Masterson would be the starting pitcher, you’d have to say you like the team’s chances, right? But as a wise man once said “that’s why they play the games.” I was there. It was cold. It was very cold. Yet there was Masterson, the Tribe’s ace, in short sleeves. About 2500 of my closest...

The Damon/Sizemore/Brantley Conundrum

And starting in left field for your Cleveland Indians, Johnny Damon….. News broke that the Indians and the 38-year old former All-Star outfielder/DH were working on a deal late Wednesday night. By Thursday afternoon, Damon went on Sirius/XM radio with former GM Jim Bowden and told the world he was excited about being an Indian, despite the fact that no announcement had come from...

4/13 Game Recap: Indians 8 - Royals 3

On the Indians off day, they signed veteran outfielder and free agent, Johnny Damon. Damon is rumored to have signed a one-year, $1.25 M deal with a no-trade clause, $1.4 M in performance bonuses, and an option to opt out and return to the free agent market once Grady Sizemore returns from the DL. The Indians signed Damon with hopes of improving their slumping offense. It is currently...

Royals lose testy affair to Indians in extras

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-run double with two outs in the 10th inning, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Kansas City Royals 11-9 on Saturday night in a testy affair with three ejections and a pair of bench-clearings. The Royals rallied from a seven-run hole to force extra innings before Choo pounded a pitch from Greg Holland (0-1) to center field. Jarrod...

Benches Clear Twice During Indians-Royals Game

Benches cleared twice in one inning during the Cleveland Indians 11-9 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night resulting in player and manager ejections. Royals starter Jonathan Sanchez hit Cleveland outfielder Shin-Soo Choo with a pitch causing benches to clear in the top of the third.   No one was ejected and play resumed but tension remained between the teams and spilled...

MLB News: Johnny Damon says he is an Indian, would like to wear number 22

Whether or not a deal is official, OF Johnny Damon sure thinks he is coming to the Indians. Damon has been texting, emailing and outright saying he and the Indians have reached an agreement to bring him to Cleveland. Here is Damon in an interview with Sirius XM radio on the deal. MLB Network’s Inside Pitch Damon also told ESPN’s Jim Bowden that a deal “has been finalized...

Johnny Damon: “Hello, Cleveland!”

It took a while, but Johnny Damon found his third new home in three years. Damon has reportedly accepted a deal with Cleveland that will give him a prorated $1.25 million base salary with another $1.4 million in incentives. The money is not that significant, relatively speaking, particularly given that Cleveland is trying to contend this season. The main issue is whether Damon can...

Royals' Hochevar leaves after taking liner off leg

Royals starter Luke Hochevar had to be helped off the field after taking a line drive off his left ankle to end the fourth inning against Cleveland on Friday. Hochevar was in the middle of his follow-through when Carlos Santana rapped a liner off the right-hander's ankle. The ball caromed to first base for the final out of the inning, but Hochevar remained down on the mound...

Damon Signs with Indians

Veteran outfielder and DH, Johnny Damon, has signed a deal with the Cleveland Indians, ESPN Insider Jim Bowden reports. The Indians have struggled offensively so far this young season, batting just .178 as a team, lowest in the Majors.  Damon is a lifetime .286 hitter and is only 277 hits away from the 3,000 milestone. Damon previously played for the Royals, Athletics, Red Sox,...

What do we know?

The Kansas City Royals are a week into their 2012 campaign. Seven games is not a large sample size. However, there are some things you can infer from the Royals past behavior during previous seasons under the current administration. I’m going to make an attempt at discerning what we know about the Royals already, and what I’m not sure about. Since Luke Hochevar got the start...

Royals' Opening Day bruises will heal

You know what? Someday, you'll look back on Friday and laugh. Or cry. That's the trouble with Opening Day. It's a holiday of hindsight. "No, obviously not the way we wanted to open up at home for our fans," Royals manager Ned Yost said after an 8-3 loss to Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium. "Just got away from us quick." Monet couldn't have painted...

While We’re Waiting… Here’s Johnny!

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. “Dwelling on Damon (who played on 16 games in the outfield last season) misses the bigger point: that the Indians have been looking for a left fielder for seven years....
