Injured Rookie Begins Rehab Assignment with Nowhere to Play in LA

As we near the end of August, the Dodgers continue to get healthier and, more specifically, begin to get a better idea of which players will be available as the postseason approaches. One name to add to the list soon is rookie outfielder Jonny DeLuca who began a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Oklahoma City this week.

DeLuca has been out since July 26th with a right hamstring strain against the Blue Jays

The 25-year-old was beginning to get a fair share of playing time right as he hit the injured list and since then has seemingly had his role filled by a number of trade acquisitions. Mainly Kiké Hernandez who was acquired from the Red Sox on the same day DeLuca went down with the injury.

With that in mind, DeLuca will play a few games on this rehab assignment and, barring injuries at the big league level, will be optioned to Triple-A as soon as this weekend.

DeLuca hit .262 with 2 home runs and 6 runs batted in over 24 games this season. He also played a quality center field, highlighted by a crazy two play stretch in Texas where he robbed a hit and robbed a home run on back to back plays.

Depending on the Dodgers plans, he could also be activated after rosters expand on September 1st while DH J.D. Martinez remains sidelined with a groin issue.
