The Tampa Bay Rays made it official after weeks of speculation that Hideki Matsui is now a Ray. The 38 year old Matsui was called up from Triple A Durham after a 2-1 loss to the White Sox in Chicago with the Rays managing only 3 hits.   Riddled with injuries it was only short period of time before the Rays had to do something. The current roster looks nothing like we expected leading into the 2012 season. Now with the addition of Matsui, presumably for the DH spot, it’s going to be even more “non-Ray” like. I don’t know how much more duct tape and super glue this team can take before it implodes and falls off the face of the AL East. They have got to be teetering on the edge mentally. It is a meticulous balancing act the Joe Maddon is performing while his Rays stay in contention with Baltimore for the AL East lead.

Matsui makes big impression in Rays debut

ST. PETERSBURG After a month in the making, Matsui Mania descended upon Tropicana Field with one Godzilla-worthy wallop. Veteran slugger Hideki Matsui may have taken his time moving up the ranks of the Tampa Bay Rays' minor leagues, accompanied each step of the way by a throng of some 50 Japanese media members. But he wasted absolutely no time Tuesday night endearing himself...

Fan loses pants going for foul ball

Welcome to the no pants party my friend! Watch as a Tampa Bay Rays fan’s pants fall off as he bends over to pick up a foul ball off the bat of José Molina. This guy gets an A+ for his souvenir retrieval effort, but an F for his decision not to wear a belt to the ballpark. Thanks for the unnecessary wardrobe malfunction kind sir. Tampa Bay Rays fan’s pants fall down after...

Hideki Matsui goes to Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays have purchased the contract of designated hitter Hideki Matsui from Triple-A Durham. The former-New York Yankees outfielder and DH— who went by the nickname Godzilla— was a fan favorite for six years in the Bronx before being released in 2010.  His quiet demeanor and consistent play were rewarded by two MLB All-Star selections and a World Series title in...

Matsui homers after new teammates give him royal treatment

The Tampa Bay Rays welcomed outfielder Hideki Matsui to the team Tuesday afternoon in their own unique way -- with strobe lights, a disco ball, loud music, slaps on the back and shoulders. Then, his new teammates let Matsui light the Captain Morgan sign that hangs on the wall in a corner of the clubhouse. This is the typical scene after a home win, with the player of the game lighting...

Hideki Matsui Returns: The Rays, Godzilla, and LHP

Godzilla’s back, and there’s gonna be trouble. Hideki Matsui, after a somewhat* underwhelming display in Triple-A, will join the Tampa Bay Rays tonight as they take on the Chicago White Sox at home. Some might suspect the move has to do with Monday afternoon’s outing against the White Sox in which Chris Sale struck out 15 Rays hitters — against a lineup featuring backup catcher...

Rays turn to Shields to slow down White Sox

Tune into Sun Sports at 6:30 p.m. to watch the Tampa Bay Rays take on the Chicago White Sox. One of the few concerns currently facing the surging Chicago White Sox is the performance of Philip Humber. Still searching for his first victory since pitching a perfect game more than a month ago, Humber tries to help the White Sox extend their longest winning streak of the season to...

Rays activate Lobaton, send Gimenez to Triple-A

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have activated catcher Jose Lobaton from the 15-day disabled list and optioned catcher Chris Gimenez to Triple-A Durham. The moves were announced before Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Lobaton missed 41 games with right shoulder soreness. Also, Tampa Bay outfielder Desmond Jennings, on the 15-day DL due to a sprained...

Hawk Harrelson Goes Nuts During Today’s Rays-Sox Beanball War

Those of you watching today’s Rays-Sox game already knew there was some drama between these two teams on this Wednesday afternoon. Those of you at work don’t know that Hawk Harrelson went absolutely nuts in a verbal assault on umpire Mark Wegner after he ejected pitcher Jose Quintana threw behind Ben Zobrist. Take a listen at Hawk going off the rails. Hurry, MLB will kill this...

Rays, Orioles struggling after hot start

ST. PETERSBURG -- The battle for bragging rights in the AL East suddenly doesn't look like all that much to brag about. It was only a week ago that the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays were setting the pace atop the division, picking up steam heading toward their three-game series starting Friday night at Tropicana Field. But right now, the impending showdown for supremacy...

Fan loses shorts grabbing foul ball

Watch closely as a fan in Tampa grabs this foul ball off the bat of Jose Molina Wednesday night.  Warning: don’t watch too closely. I’m not even sure a belt would have solved this wardrobe malfunction. Did his shorts rip? Did he watch the rest of the game in his skivvies? Is this one of the worst things you’ve seen at a baseball game? I have to hand it to the guy.  He went...

Chris Sale, Matt Moore Match-up for Strikeout Showdown on Memorial Day

Around the time you were throwing your burgers and beer soaked brats on the grill to officially kick-off the summer, Chris Sale started summer for all of us by striking out 15 Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Moore countered with 10 of his own. The reason this was special was it figures to be the first of several match-ups between two American League power pitchers that goes into the next decade...

Hawk Harrelson loses his mind

During Wednesday’s win over Tampa Bay, White Sox announcer, Hawk Harrelson absolutely lost his mind.  In the bottom of the 4th, Sox pitcher, Jose Quintana, threw at Tampa Bay Right Fielder, Ben Zobrist and was ejected. Hawk has a reputation for being a homer, but this was one of his most memorable rants. With gems like [...]

White Sox's Quintana gets quick thumb for pitch behind Rays' Zobrist

The Chicago White Sox swept a three-game series from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday with a 4-3 win, the first time the South Siders have scored a three-game sweep at Tropicana Field. However, they also left a lasting impression that might have a carryover when the two teams play again in late September at U.S. Cellular Field. Both White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana and manager Robin...

Video: Hawk Harrelson Explodes After Ejection

The red-hot White Sox took on the Tampa Bay Rays earlier today in the third of a 3-game series in which Chicago had already taken the first two. While you know every team will have a handful of chippy, emotional, and even violent games throughout the course of a regular season, you don’t expect them to come when teams from different divisions who rarely see each other square off...
