Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday night with a nose injury. Matusz bruised his nose while bunting during batting practice on Tuesday. He was supposed to start Wednesday against Pittsburgh, but was moved back in the rotation to Friday. Matusz says he feels fine and could have pitched if needed against the Pirates, but he was pushed back after a discussion with manager Buck Showalter. Matusz says he's feeling a small measure of pain, but added, ''I should be fine for Friday.'' Jake Arrieta will start Wednesday for the Orioles. Arrieta was demoted to the bullpen after his last start and will be throwing on four days' rest.

Arrieta gets back on track in spot start

On Wednesday morning, Jake Arrieta was a reliever -- demoted from the Baltimore Orioles' rotation last week. The former Opening Day starter was trying to turn his season around. By Wednesday night, he was the man, having thrown seven innings as an emergency starter in place of injured lefty Brian Matusz. Arrieta cruised into the middle innings and battled through the seventh...

Q&A with Orioles 17th Rd Pick Nick Grim

The Baltimore Orioles selected RHP Nick Grim from Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo.

Winning and Attendance: Part 1

I have said for years that the remedy for the poor attendance is not signing premier free agents, not signing "exciting name players" for marketing purposes, not putting "Baltimore" back on the away jerseys and not a better customer experience at the park. Those things are nice but factor that was going to move the needle for attendance was going to be winning...

Orioles 8, Pirates 6

Brian Roberts returned from a 13-month layoff to get three hits and an RBI, and the Baltimore Orioles homered three times in an 8-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Activated from the 60-day disabled list before the game, Roberts went 3 for 4 with a sacrifice fly. Playing in the majors for the first time since sustaining a concussion on May 16, 2011, Baltimore...

Brian Roberts returns to Orioles

Soon after a concussion interrupted his baseball career, Brian Roberts was more concerned with simply living a normal life than returning to the game he loves. ''There were times throughout the process that the future looked so bleak,'' the Baltimore Orioles second baseman said Tuesday, hours before he was to play his first major league game in 13 months. Roberts...

The Return of Brian Roberts

Last night, the Orioles won their third straight game in a row as they defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in interleague action, by a score of 8-6. Wei-Yin Chen (6-2) won another game – he went 6 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, Adam Jones had four hits, along with his 18th homer of the year; in addition, Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis went deep. Jim Johnson got his 19th save of the...

GAMEDAY: Pirates at Orioles

Pirates (32-28) at Orioles (35-26) 7:05 PM EST–Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore Here is the MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT Sports During their recent stretch of of solid play, the Pirates have still had their fair share of ugly games. They’ve done a great job of “showering well” (as Clint Hurdle says) and shaking it off the next day, though, and that’s the goal tonight...

Bye bye Baltimore

Following the surprising and very upsetting news of Charlie Morton‘s Tommy John surgery, the Bucs could have used a nice lift from Erik Bedard and company tonight in Baltimore. They didn’t get it, and were blown out to complete a really awful series. Bedard was bad from the start in his former home ballpark. The O’s struck for four runs in the first inning…the dagger being...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Baltimore Orioles – Game 62

This is going about exactly as I expected.  One guy who is a very questionable starter and another who is in no way a starter going back to back against a really good team is a recipe for disaster. #Hurdled And this has been one of my main criticisms with Clint Hurdle and the Pirates [...]
