There were some minor injuries updates that came out yesterday both on the field and from the clubhouse.  The Reds got a scare, and the Diamondbacks are nicked up.  Here are your injury quick hits. Homer Bailey took a comebacker off his ankle in the the Reds' matchup against the Cardinals yesterday.  Bailey had not been performing well up to that point and was taken out of the game.  The Reds' trainer went to the mound with the Dusty Baker, but it appeared as if Bailey was lifted because of performance, not injury.  Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic noted that Jason Kubel was conspicuously out of the Diamondbacks' lineup yesterday.  Kubel has little issues that were bothering him.  He hopes to play Friday, but the exact reason he missed yesterday's game is not quite clear.  On the other hand, Aaron Hill's absence for the Diamondbacks' finale against the Pirates yesterday was for an obvious reason.  Hill was hit on the hand in Tuesday's game and is nursing soreness.  The X-rays on the hand were negative, and he too expects to be back Friday says Piecoro. Cincinnati Reds Friday Minor League Scouting Notebook

Drew Cisco I was able to watch his first start of the season. It was my first chance to see him and I came away impressed. He commanded the strikezone with four pitches. His fastball, short breaking curve, big breaking curve and change up were all pitches he could locate where the catcher wanted them. Guys his age simply can’t do things like that. A lot of Major Leaguers can...

In brief: 100 things Reds fans should know and do before they die

Last game Despite the offenseive show that the Reds have been putting on so far this season, last night’s game was a pitcher’s duel that the Cardinals won, 1-5. Bronson Arroyo had a perfect game going into the sixth, but suddenly he hit the wall and gave up 4 runs. Pinch hitter Matt Adams topped that scoring off with a home run. In the game wrap on Reds.com, Adams had this to...

Pollock, Marte giving D-backs tough decision

PHOENIX -- In about a week, or whenever Cody Ross returns from the disabled list, the Diamondbacks likely will be forced to return either A.J. Pollock or Alfredo Marte to the minor leagues. It is the curse of the young and optionable on a deep, veteran team. On Wednesday, they belonged in an All-Star setting, as both rookies had career games. Pollock had his first three-hit game...

Help Todd Frazier avenge Brandon Phillips

It's time for more web gems. Yesterday you saw a great defensive play by Brandon Phillips face an amazing leaping catch at the wall by Don Kelly of the Tigers. Kelly was able to overtake the 4-time reigning web gem through fan voting. Today however, Todd Frazier has shown up to avenge the loss by Phillips and reclaim glory for Cincinnati. Frazier came up with his own nice...

1940 Life Magazine report, photo document Dodgers fan’s pummeling of ump

For anybody who believes that over the years we have become a more crass, less refined and an increasingly boorish group of fans who attend MLB games at baseball parks, think again. A 1940 report from Life Magazine documents the pummeling of umpire George Magerkurth by Brooklyn Dodgers fan Frank Gernano following a game between the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 16, 1940...

On the road with the Reds: Nationals Park

Pack your bags and hit the road for an away game this season! The 2013 season will be different and at times, difficult, for me as I am now officially out of Reds country. This is the first year in nearly a decade in which I am not at the ballpark every homestand, either hawking beer and peanuts or slathering on sunblock and cheering from my season ticket seat from the bleachers...

Sanchez struggles, Pirates unable to complete sweep

The final game of the series in Arizona was not a pretty one.  Jonathan Sanchez struggled with just about everything, and Wade Miley was his usual effective self, limiting the Pirates’ offense to just 2 runs in a 10-2 loss. The Diamondbacks scored their first run in the 1st inning on a pickoff attempt.  AJ…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Cincinnati Reds – Game 9

One must assume at this point in time Jonathan Sanchez and Chris Leroux will be 1. and 1a. when some of these pitchers start to get healthy. It was pretty infuriating to me that Sanchez broke camp with the team in the first place.  If he stays much longer I just might have to take…

Pirates 6, Reds 5

Every win the Bucs manage to get against the Reds this season is going to feel great, and this was certainly a nice way to start.  Team leaders A.J. Burnett and Andrew McCutchen led the way in knocking off the NL Central favorites and starting this weekend’s series off right. Burnett managed to meet the requirements for a quality start, but just barely (6 innings, 3 runs). This...

Bucs’ Bats Finally Show Signs of Life in Win at Arizona

It took more than a week, but the Pittsburgh Pirates finally showed something resembling consistency on offense in the Bucs’ 6-5 win on Wednesday against Arizona at Chase Field. Starling Marte had two hits, including a two-run double in the fourth, in the Pirates 6-5 win at Arizona. Photo credit: David Hague The Pirates posted a season-high in runs scored and broke into double...

Pirates claim sweet victory from Reds

AJ Burnett gave a strong effort, and a few more bats came to life in tonight’s 6-5 win over the Reds.  Brandon Phillips homered twice but struck out to end the game for a sweet Buccos victory. Phillips’ first homerun came in the 2nd inning, as he led off with a homerun to tie the…

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Game 8

Sometimes life can be challenging.  For example, I’ve spent basically the entirety of the past two days either in a hotel lobby, on a roof, snaking pipes, or shopping for a new toilet. That’s not to complain, adversity is what makes life great.  Hopefully the Pirates have learned that lesson and this response is real. A series…
