News has come out this week that the Cincinnati Reds are now fielding offers for prized first-base prospect Yonder Alonso, which means the 24-year-old Cuban native has something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. The former first round pick has been stuck in purgatory, otherwise known as Louisville Kentucky, playing for the Reds’ Triple-A farm club for the past two years while major league first baseman, Joey Votto, has staked his claim as one of the best hitters in baseball. It’s a decision the Reds have been facing for the last several years. As a club, do they make the move to sign Votto, the 2010 NL MVP, to a monster long-term deal? Or do they go the cheaper route, trust their farm system, and let Alonso become an All-Star himself in Cincinnati. Their choice is now clear, and as a result they are asking for a king’s ransom for Alonso who has played in just 69 MLB games. According to some reports, the Reds, who look to get back into competition in 2012, are asking for either ...

Yonder Alonso: Should he Stay or Should he Go?

Yonder Alonso must feel more like a grub worm than a professional baseball player right now. This due to the recent speculation claiming the team is dangling the prized prospect as their primary trade bait for pitching -- namely another top-notch starter and/or closer to fill the vacancy left behind by free agent Francisco Cordero. While there's no doubt Cincinnati's starting...

Baseball’s Brightest Stars at Redsfest 2011

I dunno…the fact that the only bona fide baseball activity coming out the Reds world is Brandon Phillips tweeting about his lack of contract kinda has me down. But gosh, it’s a little early to be getting all negative already doesn’t it? So rather than go off on a rant, I clicked on another of the unnecessary navigation buttons in the Redsfest landing page on Reds...

You Scout: Donald Lutz

An idea started over at Project Prospect that I have borrowed because I think it gives some good insight into the players and what we can all see with them while watching the same video. The Reds added Donald Lutz to the 40-man roster last week, which was a bit of a shocker given he is a position player who has never been above Low A. He is coming off of a season where he hit...

This Day in Reds History: The End of an Era

November 28th, 1978 - In a decision that took the entire baseball world by surprise, new GM Dick Wagner fires Sparky Anderson and replaces him with John McNamara. The following is an excerpt taken from Redleg Journal on the shocking occurrence: "The stunning move touche a wave of protest among Reds fans. No one was more surprised than Anderson, who had just returned six...

Reds Shopping Yonder Alonso For Pitching

The Reds are offering Yonder Alonso as trade bait in their search for a closer or a No. 2 starter, reports Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown.  Reds GM Walt Jocketty has spoken to several teams --- including the A's, Blue Jays, Indians and Rays --- about Alonso, though we heard earlier this week that the Reds thought Alonso was too much to give up for Oakland closer Andrew Bailey...

A Closer Look at Jayson Werth’s Contract (Or Why the Giants Could’ve signed Jose Reyes Without Raising Payroll)

Last Year the Washington Nationals surprised everybody by signing Free Agent OF Jayson Werth to a 7 year $126 Million contract. While Werth had a disappointing debut in Washington, the Nationals front office did do a good job of structuring his contract in a unique way that could have benefitted the Giants with Reyes. In the offseason, the common refrain was that the Giants couldn...

Latest Yonder Alonso Suitors/Rumors

The latest rumors I have heard swirling around Yonder Alonso have him possibly ending up on the southside of Chicago, or with the AL Champion Texas Rangers. The latter scenario is very intriguing to me. Let me preface the rest of the post with the disclaimer that once again, these are RUMORS, and also that I prefer James Shields. I am certainly a fan of bringing American League...

Nationals Re-Sign Carlos Maldonado

The Nationals have re-signed catcher Carlos Maldonado, according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com (via Twitter).  The move was first reported by El Universal (Spanish link). Maldonado, 32, hit .234/.361/.342 in 38 games with Triple-A Syracuse this season.  The veteran also spent four games on the Nats' varsity squad in 2011.  Maldonado has been with Washington since signing with...

Clayton Kershaw and Jay Bruce Present Those Contest Answers Some of You Have Been Waiting For!

The contest is officially closed! Anyways, apparently I've become predictable, because far more people guessed low than I assumed would. So, how much was that pair of sweet 2009 A&G autos - featuring Cy Young Winner Clayton Kershaw and Reds star Jay Bruce? Well, let me first say I grabbed 'em as a lot on eBay. The cards were listed decently, with the correct player names...

Note: Francisco Cordero is now a Type-B free agent

Under the new rules of the collective bargaining agreement, RHP Francisco Cordero is now a Type-B free agent, and so he will no longer cost his new team any draft picks. On Monday, SI.com’s Jon Heyman predicted Cordero would sign a two-year, $16 million contract. However, Joe Nathan recently signed a two-year, $14.5 million contract with the Rangers. In an interview with Jim...
