I guess the department that handles the jinxes had to bring out the big guns. Matt Harvey successfully defeated the Sports Illustrated Jinx. But just weeks later it was announced that Harvey would participate in ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue. And it turns out that the issue didn't even have to hit the stands to put the whammy on Matt, as he had his worst outing of the season in a 5-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Harvey was fine for the first five innings. Not his usual Harvey self, good enough to overcome a lack of command to get strikeouts when he needed them. (He had nine in his six plus innings.) But with two outs in the sixth inning Harvey hung a slider, and everybody's favorite vertically challenged person Cody Ross ran into it and dinked it over the left field wall for a three run dinger. You might remember Cody Ross from that time he got hit by a Mike Pelfrey pitch, and then waited for people to block Pelfrey's path to him before getting up on his tippie toes to chirp at him. For those that don't remember, let me remind you: What some might not know is that Ross makes his living in the offseason running a very successful bakery: Which is to say ... I hate the guy. Then after Terry Collins left Harvey out for the seventh, he walked Tony Campana, gave up a single to Aaron Hill, and watched in horror as Eric Young Jr. looked more like Lucas Duda on an Eric Chavez drive over his head, and the fourth run came home. Then Scott Rice came in and allowed Harvey's fifth run to score and then walked two before David Aardsma got out of the inning. It's too late at night after another two hour rain delay and a game of over three hours to get into a long discussion about how Rice's arm is starting to fall off and live a life of its own after Collins has used him every day since February. Instead I'll simply tell you that Harvey's ERA jumped from 2.00 to 2.27, and his WHIP has gone from 0.85 to 0.91, which could only mean that Tony La Russa as an excuse to tell Bruce Bochy that he should start somebody else for the All Star Game. I don't know what's sadder: The fact that Harvey lost, or the fact that the Mets couldn't get a guy into scoring position off Heath Bell in the ninth. But fear not, because at least somebody in a Mets uniform got lucky tonight. Or at least tried to. Bom chicka wah wah.
