When you think of great shortstops, you think of Venezuela.
First with Luis Aparicio, then with Ozzie Guillen, and now with Omar Vizquel, the line stretches from 1959 through 2012.
The next great shortstops from this part of the world are both from small island countries off Venezuela.
The one everyone has heard about is Jurickson Profar, from Willemstad, Curacao.
The 19 year-old phenom for the Texas Rangers that hit a home run his Major League at-bat last week. Profar is currently ranked as the number one prospect in baseball, but he might not even be number one in his neighborhood.
Close by to his island is the country of Aruba, and San Nicholas is the home of the Red Sox number one prospect, another shortstop, Xander Bogaerts. And Bogaerts might be better than Profar right now.
Look at their numbers for 2012….
Bogaerts hit .307 with 20 home runs, 82 RBI and an OPS of .896.
Profar hit .281 with 14 home runs, 62 RBI and an OPS of .820.
