CHICAGO – The business of projecting minor league prospects is about as sure a bet as people getting in shape for beach season: some work out, but most don’t. The hype around the current crop of Cubs prospects undoubtedly will be the same. You can dream that they’ll all comprise this magical all-star team, but that is just not sensible. While that unfortunate reality may rear its ugly head one day, that doesn’t mean, for now, we can’t revel in their early success. Look out! Scouts and fans alike have been blown away with some of the big names including Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Albert Almora. Bryant hit a home run in his first at-bat of the spring while Baez broke a car window in batting practice. Almora is showing at just 19-years-old, he has all the tools to be an elite Major League player. All this and it’s barely a week into Spring Training! Similar stories will undoubtedly continue to trickle out as spring camp continues but to this point, it’s all positives. Go down the li...

Chicago Cubs: 3 Up and 3 Down

Chicago Cubs: 3 Up and 3 DownThe good news for the 2013 Chicago Cubs is they had a better record than the 2012 Cubs did. The bad news, however, is with the Houston Astros moving to the AL West, the Cubbies had its first last place finish since 2006. With a ballpark colloquially known as the Friendly Confines, the North Siders lost 50 games at Wrigley Field last season. A Sept. 25...

2014 Cubs Minor League Camp Rosters

Dillon Maples, Jen-Ho Tseng, Felix Pena, and Jesus Pineyro threw "live" BP this morning, as Cubs minor leaguers had their first full-squad work-out at the Under Armour Performance Center at Riverview Park in Mesa, AZ. 2014 CUBS MINOR LEAGUE CAMP ROSTERS (last updated 3-6-2014): Tags: Cubs Minor Leagues

The Long-Term Effect of Starlin Castro’s Injury on Barney and Baez

Chicago Cubs News - Starlin Castro has a minor hamstring injury that could work out in the Chicago Cubs favor. Manager Rick Renteria will be shuffling his middle infield to not only fill spots but to increase some player’s value. This 7-10 day  injury could play big in the future of the Cubs organization. Filling In For Castro Darwin Barney, who last played shortstop in July 2012...

Bring Sammy Sosa Back to the Chicago Cubs. We’re Ready.

Chicago Sports News – Recently Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts hinted at the possibility of reaching out to former slugger Sammy Sosa in the future. Sammy left a bad taste in people’s mouths with his departure, but the time has passed. In the last few seasons a couple organizations have brought back players from the “steroid era” as coaches and people seem to be warm to the...

James Russell expects to bounce back in rebuilt Cubs bullpen

James Russell is an old-school reliever. He grew up in big-league clubhouses. He wants the ball. He doesn’t think the Cubs have overworked him. Russell hasn’t appeared in a Cactus League game yet and doesn’t expect to throw off a mound again until next week. But the 28-year-old left-hander thinks he needs to throw only five or six innings to be ready for Opening Day. “Typical...

Chicago Cubs: 2014 Season Preview

Standing O Sports is previewing all 30 Major League teams seasons, division by division, team by team. Up next is the National League Central and the Chicago Cubs. What Happened Last Season: The Chicago Cubs were bad last season. How bad? The team finished with the fourth worst record in the league and were 31 games behind the NL Central leading Cardinals. Teams usually perform better...

OV “Daily” Facepalm 03-05-2014

Castellanos on waivers Alex Castellanos was just put on waivers for the second time this year. I wrote about it the first time, concluding: I'm not saying that Castellanos could ever start for the Cubs (though I'm not sure he's not better than Sweeney), but he makes so much sense as the RH side of the CF/RF platoon, someone who could even play 2B in a pinch. I'd...

Cubs Rumors: Sign or Trade Jeff Samardzija?

The Chicago Cubs have been rumored for months of having Jeff Samardzija on the trade block.  Whether the price wasn't right or the Cubs changed their minds, he remained on the team.  Now comes word from Jim Bowden of ESPN that the Cubs want to keep him around long term:"Jed Hoyer (of the) Cubs made it clear to us that their preference is to sign Jeff Samardzija rather...

Road to Opening Day: #26

The Cubs won two spring training games in a row.  This doesn’t really mean anything, but it’s cool whenever a guy like Mike Olt puts a charge into a ball.  I don’t think that by itself is enough to win him the third base job, but hey, it certainly won’t hurt him! Follow along as we count down to Opening Day.  Next on the lineup… Sweet Swingin’ Billy Williams Billy...

Cubs add Theodore Roosevelt Lilly to front office

We’re not ones to mix our presidential metaphors, but it is beginning to look like a Cubs World Series title is (manifest) destiny. See, the last time the Cubs were the kings of the baseball world, Theodore Roosevelt was in office. And after a century of tinkering (hidden Cub pun!) with various failed measures like a College of Coaches and back-t0-back-to-back  first-round picks...

Fans Want to See This Gretzky in Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs drafted Trevor Gretzky in the 7th round of the 2011 draft but he is not the one everyone is hoping to see in Wrigley Field. It’s not his father,“The Great One” Wayne Gretzky, either. The biggest talent to come out of the family is Wayne’s daughter, Paulina Gretzky. Maybe if her brother made the big club she would come and watch him play. How lucky would the...

OV “Daily” Facepalm

Ted Lilly Added to Cubs front office Ted Lilly signed on with the Cubs FO as a special assistant, and should be around as an instructor in spring training as well as doing some scouting and stuff during the season. Even though he struggled with injuries last year and retired this offseason, he might still have been good enough to crack the Cubs rotation. Like the CBA, the new home...

Road to Opening Day: #25

Welp…the Cubs didn’t win on Wednesday.   Final #Rockies 7, #Cubs 5. Baez and Kottaras hit back to back HRs. Att: 10,598 — Carrie Muskat (@CarrieMuskat) March 5, 2014   There was what was termed a “Little League grand slam” late in the game when Christian Villanueva threw a ball away. Sometimes things just happen. But it’s spring training, you kind of expect silly things...

And the Winner is….

About a month ago, we started a contest to find a new Home Run call for World Series Dreaming. There were many entries, and they were all very good! However, they could not all win, in the end we had to decide which was the best Home Run call, and what we would use all year every time the Chicago Cubs hit a Home Run. In the end, there were two standout calls that we could not choose...

Baseball Prospectus' Jason Parks drools over Cubs prospects

Sometimes, it can be hard to be patient. Especially when it comes to prospects. When the Cubs invited three of the "Core Four" to spring camp, it was considered an opportunity for Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Albert Almora to showcase their elite skills. And that's exactly what happened when Baseball Prospectus' Jason Parks got a glimpse of Cubs camp earlier this...
