CHICAGO – The business of projecting minor league prospects is about as sure a bet as people getting in shape for beach season: some work out, but most don’t. The hype around the current crop of Cubs prospects undoubtedly will be the same. You can dream that they’ll all comprise this magical all-star team, but that is just not sensible. While that unfortunate reality may rear its ugly head one day, that doesn’t mean, for now, we can’t revel in their early success. Look out! Scouts and fans alike have been blown away with some of the big names including Kris Bryant, Javier Baez and Albert Almora. Bryant hit a home run in his first at-bat of the spring while Baez broke a car window in batting practice. Almora is showing at just 19-years-old, he has all the tools to be an elite Major League player. All this and it’s barely a week into Spring Training! Similar stories will undoubtedly continue to trickle out as spring camp continues but to this point, it’s all positives. Go down the list of Cubs prospects and it’s hard to find a negative. Thankfully, none have come in 30 pounds overweight or gotten in any legal troubles as is too often the case with young players in the offseason. This group seems different and maybe it’s a fool’s optimism, but they almost have me believing. Almost. Back to Reality There will undoubtedly be struggles, moments of doubt, and pessimism among fans. There will be times where it all feels like its caving in for the prospects, that they’ll never get out of a funk. But so it goes for the life of a prospect, and what will really determine their future is if they can grow and adjust to the rigors of professional baseball. This group is still a year or two away, with most suggesting 2016 as the first year with elite expectations and at least a competitive team in 2015. This time frame is contingent on the likes of Bryant and Baez developing into the stars they’re expected to be. As Cubs fans know too well, this whole system could fail in perfect Cubs fashion; but for now, we can all still dream of the possibilities. _________ Source(s): Baseball Reference, ESPN, Chicagoist, Sports Speak, Baseball Prospectus; Jesse Rodgers Author informationMax AndersonColumnist at Sports MockeryIf you have any questions or comments please contact info@sportsmockery.com - Thank you for reading.FacebookGoogle+The post It’s Early, But Chicago Cubs Prospects Are Impressing appeared first on Sports Mockery.
