After a month or so of speculation, the New York Mets have made it official; Johan Santana will once again be there opening day starter.

Johan apparently got word Sunday morning that the team would in fact be going with him when they square off against Tommy Hanson and the Atlanta Braves.

The decision to start Johan for the opener was likely made easier for the team after the lefty  threw 39 warmup  and another 32 game-situation pitches in his final extended outing of the spring on Saturday afternoon.  After that session, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York said “….the expectation is Santana will be named the Opening Day starter. The only disruption should be if Santana shows up at the complex Sunday feeling discomfort.”

Apparently there was no disruption to speak of, which is great news and gave the team the confidence to move forward.  The entire Spring it seems like this was the plan, but the front office remained cognizant of what was at risk.

“I’m not going to sacrifice six months, I’m not going to sacrifice the last two years of him working his butt off for one start, to have him pitch Opening Day,” manager Terry Collins said, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “We’re going to sit down with a number of people involved and make the correct decision.”

With that decision finally being made, all we can do now is enjoy having #57 back on the mound to start the season and hope that he can build on a Spring in which he boasted a 3.44 ERA over 5 starts.
