Jake Marisnick Transferred To 60-Day Injured List, Gus Varland Called Up

The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred Jake Marisnick to the 60-day injured list and selected the contract from Gus Varland from Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to Tuesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Verland takes the place of Joe Kelly on the active roster, who was previously put on the 15-day IL due to right elbow/forearm inflammation.

Varland was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB Draft out of Concordia University before joining the Dodgers as part of a trade involving Adam Kolarek.

After pitching in parts of two seasons with the Dodgers organization, Varland was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 10th pick in the Major League phase of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft.

The right-hander was included on the Brewers’ Opening Day roster this season and struggled to the tune of an 11.42 ERA, 9.52 FIP and 2.65 WHIP in 8.2 innings pitched across eight games.

Varland spent three weeks on the 15-day IL after being hit on his pitching hand by a line drive. He was activated for the Brewers’ series against the Dodgers this past May and threw 1.1 scoreless innings in his only appearance.

The Brewers designated Varland for assignment later that month and returned him to the Dodgers after he cleared waivers. Since rejoining the organization, the 26-year-old has posted a solid 2.16 ERA, 3.19 FIP, 1.11 WHIP and 10.5 strikeouts per nine in 33.1 innings over 30 games (one start) with OKC.

With the Dodgers beginning a three-game series against the Brewers, Varland could have an opportunity to face his former team.

Jake Marisnick on 60-day IL

The Dodgers transferred Jake Marisnick to the 60-day injured list in order to make room for Varland on their 40-man roster. The earliest Marisnick is eligible to be activated is September 17.

He originally was put on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain on July 19. That occurred less than one week after the veteran outfielder signed with the Dodgers.

Marisnick became a free agent upon getting designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers and clearing waivers. He rejected an outright assignment to the Minor Leagues in favor of free agency.

Marisnick appeared in four games with the Dodgers, each of them off the bench.

The 32-year-old was hitless in nine games with the Chicago White Sox before being traded, and batted .232/.270/.420 with three doubles, two triples, two home runs and 12 RBI over 33 games with the Tigers.
