Jake Peavy turned in his second solid outing in three starts for the Red Sox, but Boston’s inability to push runners across left the right-hander on the hook. Peavy held the Blue Jays scoreless through six innings Thursday night before running into trouble in the seventh. Pitching with a 1-0 lead, Peavy allowed the first two runners in the inning to reach (via error and single) before Brett Lawrie drove in the game-tying run with a base hit of his own. Craig Breslow entered to try to limit the damage, but he promptly allowed an RBI single to pinch hitter Mark DeRosa, with the go-ahead run being charged to Peavy. Hear the starter’s evaluation of his performance in the video above. Filed under: Boston Red Sox, Boston Red Sox Video, NESN Video, Red Sox Clubhouse Uncut, Top Stories, Video

David Ortiz Rubs Mike Napoli’s Beard, Unsettling Viewers Everywhere

For a few moments, it looked like this would be another comeback for the ages. With the Sox down 3-1 and down to their final out, the spiraling Mike Napoli came through big time, launching a two-run homer to tie the game and keep hope alive. Sadly, we couldn’t push it any further, even after loading the bases in that same inning. In the top of the tenth, Naps came up again with...

John Lackey Says He Has ‘A Problem’ With A-Rod Playing

A little heightened Red Sox Yankees tension. John Lackey isn’t really one to hold back, so it comes as no surprise that he would voice his opinion on the A-rod playing while appealing suspension situation. I’ve got a problem with it. You bet I do,” Lackey said on Thursday. “How is he still playing? He obviously did something and he’s playing. I’m not sure that’s...

Ben Cherington Noncommittal About Xander Bogaerts’ Arrival, Explains Decision to Recall Will Middlebrooks

Will Middlebrooks has shown improvement since being recalled to the Red Sox. But don’t expect the Xander Bogaerts conversation to go anywhere. General manager Ben Cherington joined WEEI’s Dennis and Callahan on Thursday, and he was...

Mike Napoli Dropped to No. 7 Slot in Order As Red Sox Go for Two Straight in Toronto

The monkey on Mike Napoli‘s back keeps growing larger and larger. After going 0-for-5 with three strikeouts Tuesday night (and a combined 0-for-12 with nine K’s over the last three games) Napoli was dropped to seventh in the order for Wednesday’s tilt in Toronto — the first time all season he has hit that low in the lineup. After putting up tremendous power numbers early...

Blue Jays 2, Red Sox 1

Recap - "Little League home run" helps down Sox

Jim Monaghan Contributing writer Two words for Red Sox fans this morning - Rajai Davis. Davis scored the winning run for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the tenth inning on a Brett Lawrie single to hand Boston a 4-3 loss. But it was what happened during a Davis at bat seven innings earlier that gave you the feeling this one wasn't going to go well for the Sox. You see it...

Comeback Interruptus In Canada; Sox Lose, 4-3

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Nathan Denette)Sometime down the road, the Red Sox may look back on this gut-wrenching 4-3 loss with a series of regrets. They may regret letting Rajai Davis hit an inside-the-multiple-errors-HR to score the game's first run. They may regret squandering Mike Napoli's dramatic ninth-inning, two-out, two-run HR that tied the game. They might...

Blue Jays hang on to down Red Sox in finale

David Ortiz says he’s as surprised as anyone with the Blue Jays’ poor performance this year. “When I saw what they put together in the offseason I was like ‘Whoa this is the competition.’ ” Of course it didn’t turn out that way as Ortiz’s first-place Red Sox sit a comfortable 15 games ahead of the last-place Jays. But Toronto at least lived up to Big Papi’s expectations...
