Following the White Sox 2-1 loss to the Cubs Tuesday night, White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy had a message for his teammates.  “Detroit is coming.”

He’s right.  The Tigers have won seven of their last nine games and have moved within a game off .500.  While the winning percentage still is a far cry from where everybody expected it to be, all that really matters is their place in the American League Central division.  Right now, they’re in third, two games back of first place Cleveland and a half game back of Chicago.

Peavy went on to say, “I don’t think by any means this team has lost any confidence.  We’ve shown we can play with anybody on any given day. The bottom line is we’ve just kind of been a little too streaky. We’ve been really good for a little while and not so good. Even when our not-so-good stretches, look at how easy we could have won that (game Tuesday) if we scratch a few runs across.”

The Tigers hot streak has come at the same time as the White Sox cold streak.  With Tuesday’s loss, the White Sox have lost 10 of their last 14 and are guaranteed their fifth consecutive losing series after having dropped the first two to the Cubs.

Likewise, it’s good for the Tigers that the White Sox, mainly Peavy, are focused on what happens in Detroit.  Peavy’s message was that the White Sox need to start taking care of business of Detroit will leapfrog them just like Cleveland has.  But the delivery was poor.  Teams should be focused on their own play because outside of the 19 times the White Sox and Tigers play, the Sox can’t control Miggy and the boys.

If the White Sox start scoreboard watching in June, it’s going to be a long summer on the South Side.  Keep looking in your rear-view, Jake.  With the “World Series or die” mindset of Tigers owner Mike Ilitch, the Tigers might not be there much longer.
