Editor’s note: NESN.com is holding a three-week tournament to determine “Boston’s Best Newcomer.” The Red Sox added a lot of new faces in 2013, and the results have been impressive. It’s time to determine which new addition from 2013 best embodies Boston baseball. Jake Peavy hasn’t been with the Red Sox very long, yet it feels like he’s been around since Day 1. Peavy was acquired from the White Sox as part of a polarizing trade. The Red Sox traded away slick-fielding infielder Jose Iglesias to acquire Peavy, and some wondered whether the veteran pitcher would be worth the price. Peavy has not only pitched well, but his make-up and personality have been a perfect fit. Peavy said all of the right things during his introductory news conference, making it clear that he was excited to join an organization built on tradition. Ever since that day, his competitive fire has been on display, with the most vivid examples coming when he yells at himself on the mound. Don’t mistake Peavy’s mound intensity for him being a jerk, though. The right-hander has made it clear that he doesn’t want to offend anyone and that his yelling is simply his way of focusing. The Red Sox are filled with guys whose main focus is winning, so they certainly understand. Round 1 Koji Uehara (1) vs. Mike Carp (8) >> Shane Victorino (2) vs. Ryan Dempster (7) >> Mike Napoli (3) vs. Jake Peavy (6) >> Jonny Gomes (4) vs. Stephen Drew (5) >> Filed under: Boston Red Sox, Photo Gallery
