In what essentially concludes a remarkably disappointing second half for James McDonald, the Pirates are removing him from the starting rotation. Kyle McPherson will start on Wednesday against the Brewers. McDonald will presumably work out of the bullpen in low-leverage, long-relief roles.

This was obviously a move the Bucs had to make after McDonald just constantly showed the inability to put any good stretches together in the second half. He had a few good ones, but they were vastly outnumbered by disastrous outings like his most recent one. It’s all very disappointing after an All-Star worthy first half and it will be interesting to see what happens with him in the offseason. For now, McPherson should be a solid option to fill his place for the rest of the year. The Pirates reportedly do not want to go to a six man rotation, and aren’t going to re-insert Jeff Karstens until he pitches in relief first.
