The Minnesota Twins will have a new shortstop in 2012 after signing free agent shortstop Jamey Carroll to a two-year contract for $7 million. While he is not a sexy name for mixed fantasy leagues, American League only owners should definitely have his name in mind as a late $1-$3 play in fantasy baseball auction formats or as a late round pick in AL-only snake draft formats.

Turning 38 in February and with little power to speak of, he has not homered since 2009, most fantasy baseball owners will overlook him. However, he has as .278 career batting average, including hitting over .290 the last two seasons and he has double digit stolen bases in his last two years as well. His career high in at bats was 463 back in 2006 and he should be able to break that mark next season.

The move to the American League should also give him an increase in runs scored and a slight increase in his RBI as well. He also provides your team with roster flexibility qualifying at second base as well as shortstop which is very nice to have in no trade leagues or if you happen to draft several players with an injury history that you have the extra insurance by being able to move players to other spots in your lineup.
