Fox Sports Ohio:
What a difference a year makes for Paul Janish -- and not in a good way.
Janish was the starting shortstop last spring. Edgar Renteria was brought in to back him up but the job was Janish's.
Janish did lose the job. He was hitting .227 without a home run on July 7 when the Reds optioned him to Class AAA Louisville and brought up Zack Cozart. Cozart was deemed the shortstop of 2012 based in a very good 11-game stint before an injury ended his season.
Janish finished with a .214 average and no home runs and 23 RBI in 336 at-bats.
This spring, Janish is fighting for a spot on the roster.
"Obviously, it's a lot different," he said. "This year, I'm doing what I can to vie (for a) spot, doing what I can to make the team. Last year, it was pretty set in stone. I knew worst-case scenario I was going to be on the team as the utility guy.
"It's a little different set-up, having to make the team. I'm trying to stay healthy and let the card fall whe...
BEST OF MAXIM
Ludwick was brought in over the winter to provide extra punch
to the batting order. Is he capable?
The 33-year old outfielder is entering his first season in the Queen City and 10th overall for his career. Reds fans probably remember Ryan Ludwick best from his time spent as a St. Louis Cardinal, and it's interesting to note that he's accumulated more homeruns (11)...
A green Reds' hat? That ain't right.
It's just spring training but it's always nice to beat those rivals from the north and that's just what the Reds (7-9-1) did in convincing fashion on Saturday, beating the Indians (4-9) by a score of 9-2. Bronson Arroyo had his best outing of the spring, while Zack Cozart led the way offensively.
Now let's take...
I am a really big fan of the Cincinnati Reds. Not a real fan, just someone that thinks they’re going to be good. They have a young squad full of bombers and speed. They have some talented young pitching and they have a manager that likes to destroy young arms.
What’s not to like? Like Tony LaRussa, Dusty Baker, wins just about everywhere he goes, in spite of himself. He practically...
It’s been a month since Spring Training started, and the Cincinnati Reds finally got around to making their first round of cuts. In all, 16 players had to pack their bags and leave big league camp. None of the decisions were surprising.
IF Kristopher Negron, IF Neftali Soto, RHP Josh Judy; IF Didi Gregorius, IF Henry Rodriguez, RHP Pedro Villarreal; IF/OF Donald Lutz and RHP Kyle...
I want to start out by saying I love Brandon Phillips, who doesn’t, but the Reds will not sign BP to a long term deal for the money Brandon wants, and this is one of the rare cases that both sides are right. Brandon is looking to get around 15 million a year and I say to a team with a higher payroll he would be a great addition to their club. The Reds just can’t commit that...
The Cuban Missile has enjoyed a nice spring thus far
The Spring Training schedule is now a little over halfway complete and Opening Day is a mere two and a half weeks away. Here's a look at who's been having success this preseason, as well as some players that haven't:
- Scott Rolen: The 36-year old is batting .444 (8-18) with a .524 OBP. He...
Here is how the Reds prospects performed in Friday and Saturday’s games:
Denis Phipps went 1-1 with a double.
Didi Gregorius went 0-1.
Neftali Soto went 0-1.
Donald Lutz went 0-1.
Henry Rodriguez went 1-3 with an RBI and a run.
Kristopher Negron went 0-0 with a walk.
Devin Mesoraco went 0-3.
Daryl Jones went 0-1.
Chris Valaika went 2-3 with 2 RBI.
Today is the eighth and final day of the series featuring our season predicitons. We hope you've enjoyed reading them as much as we enjoyed writing them. In this post we examine some of the team's potential All-Stars. Here's who we dubbed as the most likely hopefuls:

Did the Reds give up too much in acquiring young hurler Mat Latos? Drawing simply from the results of the latest poll conducted by MLBtraderumors.com, the answer is yes.
Here's the question posed by the site to its readers:
Just as a refresher, the following is a recap of the package each team received for their young arm:
-Athletics trade Trevor Cahill (and Craig...
I don't know if you can call a 79-83 season a "disaster year", but for the 2010 NL Central champion Reds, it was pretty close. They finished third a season after winning the division crown, and nothing changed all that much. 2010 MVP Joey Votto raked again, they didn't get destroyed with injuries...it just kind of all went wrong. But the Reds retooled for 2012,...
Here is how the prospects performed on Monday afternoon:
Zack Cozart went 2-2 with a double.
Bill Rhinehart went 0-1.
Todd Frazier went 0-2.
Devin Mesoraco went 0-2.
Denis Phipps went 0-2.
Daryl Jones drew a walk and scored the games only run.
Andrew Brackman is scheduled to pitch tomorrow for the Reds. It may be a big day for him if he wants to make a real run at making the big...
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Chris Sale pitched two-hit ball over six innings and struck out six Monday as the Chicago White Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds 1-0.
Sale allowed a one-out double to Zack Cozart in the first inning and a single to Cozart leading off the fourth. Sale, who had allowed eight runs in 7 1-3 innings in his previous two starts, is moving to the rotation following...
Perhaps looking ahead to their coveted off day on Wednesday, the Reds (8-11-1) took an 8-1 beating from visiting Seattle (12-7) on Tuesday. Left-hander Jeff Francis got the start opposite of Mariners' veteran Kevin Millwood. Here's a recap of the good, the bad and a few notables from the exhibition contest:
- Brandon Phillips was 2-for-2 and scored the team...
