RHP Jared Hughes has been recalled for today’s doubleheader against Colorado. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 25, 2012   Due to the new CBA signed over the off-season, teams are able to add a 26th man to their rosters for double headers. The Pirates’ have chosen reliever Jared Hughes to be that man. Hughes has a 2.08 ERA over 8 2/3 innings so far the season for the Pirates. He was recently sent down to AAA when A.J. Alvarez starting to provide power for Pirates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have waited patiently for nearly two years for third baseman Pedro Alvarez to showcase all the tools that made him the second overall pick of the 2008 draft. Their patience might finally be paying off. Following a horrific start, Alvarez's bat is showing signs of life. He hit homers in both games of a doubleheader split with Colorado on Wednesday to raise...

Jim Callis on Pedro Alvarez

A week or so ago, Baseball America's JJ Cooper published subscriber-only a piece that discusses Pedro Alvarez. An American League scout opined that if he didn't know Alvarez's pedigree, he'd be tempted to call him a non-prospect. Jim Callis follows up on that today by discussing some of the biggest position player draft busts and concluding:  Perhaps if Alvarez...

Game 16: Pirates 5 Rockies 4

Let's start with this: this post will not be about bunting. I have an alarming amount of things to say about bunting and I'll probably say them several times in the near future. The bunting in this game made me angry, but I want to save most of these thoughts for later so that I can be more coherent and (hopefully) eloquent about it. For tonight, the Pirates had one of their...

Pedro Alvarez's weird start

With 14 games under his belt in 2012, Pedro Alvarez has one of the weirdest stat lines you're ever likely to see:  Year Age Tm Lg G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ TB GDP 2012 25 PIT NL 14 46 45 5 7 1 0 4 6 1 18 .156 .174 .444 .618 67 20 0 3 Yrs 183 694 627 65 141 31 2 24 89 62 217 .225 .296 .396...

Rodriguez Getting Back To Basics

BINGHAMTON, NY - Second baseman Josh Rodriguez has been in the minor leagues for over six seasons, but he has every intention of moving forward. After a brief seven-game stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates last season, the Houston native is in his first season with the Binghamton Mets.

After the Pirates exciting win last night, they close out this series with the Rockies and this homestand with a double-header this afternoon. It's an old school doubleheader; it's starting at 12:35 and the second game will start a half hour or so after the first. One ticket, two games. Kind of makes me wish that back in Pittsburgh with a physics class to skip or something...
