Jason Giambi who collected the 2000th hit of his career Sunday says he'd like to stick around and get a few more in 2014. "I would love to play next year" said Giambi 42. "Hopefully it will be here. I love it here. I love the direction the team is going and the things we've got going here." Giambi is hitting .186 (32-for-172) with eight doubles eight homers and 29 RBI in 63 games. He blooped a single into left Sunday to start the ninth inning for No. 2000 in the Tribe's 2-1 loss to the Mets. On May 8 1995 Giambi collected his first big-league hit in the fifth inning of his big-league debut for Oakland. "It was off Roger Pavlik of Texas" he said. Two months and six games later after Giambi was sent down and recalled he homered off Toronto's David Cone on July 8 1995 for his first of 437 long balls. Asked if he had a favorite hit Giambi said "All the big ones seem to roll into one another. When you're playing you don't have time to sit back and smell the roses and say "Oh that was one huge.'" But he does remember hitting a walk-off grand slam in the 14th inning for the Yankees and getting the last hit at old Yankee Stadium. Giambi according to Elias Sports Bureau is the oldest player in history to reach 2000 hits. He passed Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk who reached 2000 in 1989 when he was 41. The former AL MVP has not played on a regular basis since 2008 with the Yankees. Giambi has taken to the mentor/bat-of-the-bench role nicely. "After my contract ran out in New York in 2008 I went back to Oakland in 2009" said Giambi. "I'd gone back there to DH but Daric Barton didn't make the team out of spring training and I ended up playing first base every day and I just got kind of run into the ground."
