How long do you stick with Clint Barmes?

Through 40 games, Clint Barmes is hitting .171/.200/.285. Last night, he drew a walk and doubled his season walk total. It's true that he was mostly signed to play defense, but it's hard to say that his defense has been anything better than about average at shortstop this year. Still, he's started more games than any Pirate other than Neil Walker this year. So how long...

Wednesday 5/23 Minor League Roundup

AAA Indianapolis | Did Not Play AA Altoona | Harrisburg 5 Altoona 3 (Game 1)Kelson Brown, Brock Holt, Miles Durham, and Quincy Latimore all had two hit games but could only scratch together free runs. There was just one extra base hit all game (a double for Latimore). Phil Irwin started and gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits while striking out seven and the Curve lost...

Game 42: Pirates 5 Mets 4

Back in my earliest days of being a Pirate fan, I had a pretty well-defined daily routine during baseball season. If it was a school night, I'd watch the earliest part of the Pirates' game (on KBL!) and go to bed at whatever time my parents deemed appropriate for school nights. If it was summer, I'd be allowed to stay up a little later and fall asleep with Lanny Fratarre...

Pre-game: Mets (23-20) at Pittsburgh Pirates (20-23)

Hello and welcome to another glorious day of Mets baseball. Today the Metsies are in Pittsburgh for a rubber game against the Buccos. On Monday night, New York jumped out to a 4-0 lead but didn’t score again for the rest of the game while Pittsburgh stormed back to win 5-4. Last night, however, the Mets struck back with a thrilling 3-2 victory in which R.A. Dickey recorded a career...

5/22 Recap | Mets 3 Pirates 2

The Pirates fell to the Mets tonight 3-2. James McDonald and RA Dickey both had fantastic outings but JMac was unable to get the victory due to the lack of offense brought to the plate by the Pirates. McDonald's final line was seven innings pitched, one run on four hits, while striking out eight. He looked dominant once again but was unfortunately not helped out by his offense...

Miscues and more whiffs

The Pirates’ hitters and defense let them down on Tuesday night, as they wasted yet another strong starting pitching effort and lost to the Mets 3-2. James McDonald was fantastic, again. It’s clear at this point that he is the Pirates’ ace, as he dominated the Mets for much of the night. After striking out the side in the first, J-Mac allowed a run in the second on two walks...

Game 43 Live Chat: Pirates vs Mets

Off Day Perspective

You love the Pittsburgh Pirates. I love the Pittsburgh Pirates, it's a special bond that joins thousands of strangers together. There are ups and down every year, unfortunately there are far more downs than ups.Which is why it's important in my eyes to enjoy an off day like today. Watching the Pirates play this year has been gruesome. Probably 40 of their 44 games have had...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets – Game 43

A gutty win?  Homeruns?  Offense?  Great work from the bullpen? That is everything the Pirates had last night.  It looked bleak, but the Pirates chipped away and got the job done.  Michael McKenry is basically going to be a lifelong Pirate if he keeps this up. First Pitch:  7:05 PM EST Where to Watch:  Root [...]

The Art Of The E And The K

I'm fully aware that the Mets pretty much won Tuesday's game because the Pirates defense failed them more than the Mets defense failed them in that eighth inning (Pittsburgh is looking squarely at you, Pedro Alvarez). And I also understand that the Pirates had just come off a three game series where they struck out a major league record 2,396,548 times against Detroit Tiger...

Betting on the Mets

Record 18-22 Bank Account -270 Mets at Pirates - I feel as though many pitchers I typically bet against are on the hill today which includes Charlie Morton, Kevin Millwood, Bronson Arroyo, etc. What can I say about the Pirates that hasn't been said? They simply have the worst offense in baseball, but Andrew McCutchen is very hot right now. The Pirates have scored two or less...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets – Game 44

If I was any starting pitcher in the league I would look long and hard at the Pirates lack of offense over the past few years before I decided to sign in Pittsburgh.  Nate McLouth continues to get important at bats…… Thank goodness for Triple A pitching depth though. First Pitch: 12:35 PM EST Where [...]

Mets 3, Pirates 1

PITTSBURGH -- New York Mets pitcher Jonathon Niese found the perfect antidote to get back on track -- the Pittsburgh Pirates' anemic offense. The left-hander pitched 7 2/3 strong innings and the Mets beat the Pirates, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park. New York took two of three games in the series and have won three of their last four overall. The Pirates lost for the...
