It was not too long ago that the mere mention of Jon Jay’s name sparked a conversation about every way that he could be replaced. But within the last few weeks, nobody has been more responsible for the turnaround of the Cardinals than him. And now, with the Cardinals back to a comfortable 20 games over .500 and firmly on the heels of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Jay continues to be the most unlikely, occasionally most undesirable, catalyst of the year. From the beginning, Jay has been a bit of a stepbrother. He slid into becoming a full-time part of the lineup two years after Colby Rasmus was hastily escorted out of Busch Stadium boundaries. And starting then and since, he’s proved his worth as a stabilizer of sorts for the team. Whether it has been as a leadoff or bottom of the order bat, or making the quick transition from plug in corner outfielder, to major landowner in an outfield devoid of much range otherwise, Jay has been a glue stick for the Cardinals over the past three years. ...

David Freese could be right-handed version of Matt Adams for St. Louis Cardinals

The moments of brilliance for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman David Freese come in flashes. He hit one of the most memorable home runs in franchise history in the 11th inning of Game 6 of the 2011 World Series against the Texas Rangers and just Monday he delivered a vital pinch-hit, two-run double to extend the Cardinals lead to 8-5 in the eighth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers...

St. Louis Cardinal Fan Catches Allen Craig’s Homer In Milwaukee

Allen Craig lifted his 12th homerun of the season this afternoon in Milwaukee, extending the St. Louis Cardinals’ lead to 7-0 at the time. The more impressive feat was that of the fan who covered a lot of ground to track down the ball and snag it out of the air. Check out the video below and tip your cap to a Cards fan in a visiting ballpark giving maximum effort to bring home...

stlcupofjoe.com: What has been different for Jon Jay?

At the start of August, Jon Jay‘s batting average was .253. Now, 18 games into August, it is up to .273, and he appears to be climbing towards that coveted .300 mark. Needless to say, Jay has been one of the hottest, most consistent hitters for the Cardinals of late. Jay has the most hits (27) and most RBI (17) in the National League for the month of August. He is second in doubles...

How far will the cardinals go this year?

The St. Louis Cardinals currently sit in second place behind the Pittsburgh Pirates by one game with 38 games left to play. They are leading the NL wild card race ahead of the Cincinnati Reds. But just how far will they go this year? Lets take a look. The cardinals are no strangers to postseason play and should not be taken lightly when it comes to the playoffs. They have...

Why Kolten Wong should continue to get more playing time than David Freese

The St. Louis Cardinals came away from Chicago with two victories in three games over the Chicago Cubs as the team now moves on to Milwaukee and another winnable series. The Chicago series marked the debut of second baseman Kolten Wong, who finished without a hit in two starts. But despite the lack of success at the plate in his debut, Wong should still get a bulk of the playing...

CardinalsFarm.com: Stephen Piscotty homers and saves one

The Baby Birds went 2-3 on Tuesday as Memphis and State College won, while Springfield, Peoria, and the GCL Cards all lost. Palm Beach’s game was suspended in the 5th inning and will be finished today and Johnson City was rained out. Here are quick game summaries followed by official box scores: Memphis shut out Omaha 4-0 on Tuesday. Jamie Romak led the way with his 21st home...

Cardinals extra: Wong finds his offense in Milwaukee

After collecting his first big-league hit Monday night in his 11th at-bat, Kolten Wong admitted a great sense of relief. He played like a man with no weight on his shoulders Tuesday night. Moved up to second in the batting order as Mike Matheny rested Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig, Wong had three more hits in the Cardinals' 6-3 loss at Milwaukee. The rookie second baseman...

Mike Shannon is recovering from heart surgery

ST. LOUIS (AP) Mike Shannon, the former St. Louis Cardinals third baseman who has been a broadcaster for the team for more than 40 years, is recovering after heart surgery. The Cardinals said Wednesday that Shannon, 74, is resting comfortably. The team said he had successful surgery Monday to replace his aorta valve. "I would like to thank everyone for their prayers, heartfelt...

Recap: Carpenter's single helps Cards rally over Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- Matt Carpenter hit an RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning, putting the St. Louis Cardinals ahead during a four-run rally Monday night in an 8-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cardinals got seven of their 16 hits in the big inning, capped by pinch-hitter David Freese's two-run double. St. Louis won for the ninth time in 11 games. Carlos Beltran and...

Have You Looked At This?

Candidly, this isn't a small feat for this Cardinals team.  There was a point a couple weeks back where the slide to 10 games over .500 was more of a realistic reality than 20+. But thanks to a realization that comebacks past the 6th inning are legally allowed and the extended break between Jake Westbrook starts... here we are again. But in case you weren't paying...

Recap: Beltran, Craig, Holliday homer as Cardinals capture Brewers series

MILWAUKEE (AP) Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig hit towering home runs in St. Louis' six-run second inning, and the Cardinals held off the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 on Wednesday. Matt Holliday also homered and Shane Robinson had three hits for the Cardinals, who have a slight lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central race. After taking a one-run lead in the first inning...

The Cardinals Rollercoaster Season

The Cardinals are neck and neck with the Pirates and Reds. I pretty much could have called it that the Reds are there, but not so much the Pirates. They may fall off still, but they look pretty damn good as a team. They are perhaps the most well-rounded team in the NL Central, which has proved to be a tough division. Well-rounded doesn’t mean best though. While Fangraphs does...

Drunk Cardinals Fan Attempts To Kick Cubs Fan, Fails Miserably

The St. Louis Cardinals played a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs — a series that started with a 7-0 win by the Cubs on Friday night. After the one-sided shutout, a drunk Cardinals fan took to the streets to defend his team’s honor, approaching a clearly unfazed Cubs fan. After a brief round of “come at me, bro” posturing, he attempted to kick said Cubs fan. Key word...

Brewers 6, Cardinals 3

Kyle Lohse finally beat the St. Louis Cardinals, and the win didn't come that easily. Lohse beat the Cardinals in his fourth try this season and Sean Halton knocked in a career-high three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat St. Louis 6-3 Tuesday night. ''They made me work for it,'' he said after improving to 3-5 in nine outings overall against his former...
