Mark Buehrle was in a hurry on Thursday night. The fastest working pitcher in baseball had tickets to see country singer Tim McGraw at the Molson Amphitheatre and he wasn’t about to wait around for his post-game interview with reporters. So he crashed his manager’s instead. “Grandparents are here to watch the kids so let’s go” Buehrle said drumming his fingers on the table as he took the mic from John Gibbons. The veteran lefty pitched his best game as a Blue Jay on Thursday throwing a complete-game shutout and holding the lowly Houston Astros to just a pair of hits for a 4-0 victory in two hours and 18 minutes. It took a visit from the worst team in baseball but the Jays finally snapped their longest losing streak of the season at seven thanks to Buehrle’s first complete game in more than a year and first shutout since his perfect game on July 23 2009. “I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of people saying ‘Obviously this is the worst team in baseball.’ Record wise they’re not very good but in my mind they’re still big-league hitters. If you make a mistake they’re going to make you pay for it” Buehrle said before contradicting himself. “I did make a few mistakes tonight got lucky and got away with them.” Buehrle took advantage of the free-swinging and inexperienced Astros — who have struck out more than any other club this season — to fan a season-high nine batters his highest total since 2005 in front of an appreciative announced crowd of 24188 at the Rogers Centre. After losing seven straight and suffering back-to-back sweeps against the Rays and Dodgers Houston was a welcome guest. But veteran starter Erik Bedard a native of Navan Ont. matched Buehrle in the early going facing the minimum into the fourth inning when Edwin Encarnacion drove home Jose Bautista with a two-out double to the wall in right field. That was all the support Buehrle needed though Adam Lind and Maicer Izturis combined to drive in three more runs in the seventh.
