Chien-Ming Wang won for the first time in more than a year, Colby Rasmus homered for a third straight game, and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep by beating the Texas Rangers 7-2 on Sunday for their fifth straight victory.
The Rangers lost their sixth in a row and fell to 1-6 on a season-high, 11-game homestand. Texas has dropped six straight for the first time since April 15-21, 2010.
Wang (1-0) allowed seven hits in seven shutout innings to win for the first time since last June 12 with Washington.
Adam Lind hit a three-run homer, and J.P. Arencibia added a two-run shot for Toronto. The Blue Jays outscored the Rangers 24-4 to sweep a four-game series at Texas for the first time.
Derek Holland (5-4) allowed four runs and 10 hits in six innings for the Rangers, who have only scored eight runs in their slide.
Elvis Andrus had an RBI single, and Ian Kinsler walked with the bases loaded to break up the shutout in the ninth.
The 33-year-old Wang was 4-4 with a 2.33...
BEST OF MAXIM
Fanning five and only allowing five hits over seven scoreless innings, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chien-Ming Wang stifled Rangers batters on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. After opting out of Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the 33-year-old Wang (1-0, 3.14 ERA) signed a one-year contract worth $500,000 last week to become a Blue Jay. Impressing with the New York Yankees affiliate before...
History tells us that these things happen to empires. The Mayans disappeared. The Spanish Armada sank. Springsteen put out Devils and Dust. The Yankees, the mightiest dynasty in sports - (after the Chinese Ping-Pong team of the 1970s), have collapsed. This is not a drill. Make your way to the exits. Women and children first. We practiced for this, people. We tracked this storm...
ARLINGTON, Texas It had been a while since the Rangers' bullpen had to protect a lead, but the Rangers' relief staff showed no signs of rust in Monday's 8-7 win over Oakland.
The bullpen retired the first 16 batters faced and helped the Rangers' offense, which finally showed some life, reclaim the lead for good.
"They settled it down and gave us a chance to...
ARLINGTON, Texas Lance Berkman and his achy knees feel fine physically.
His bat is another story.
Berkman was out of the Texas lineup for a second-consecutive day Monday as manager Ron Washington wanted to give his designated hitter a chance to get some rest.
Berkman is using the time to work on his mechanics.
"I felt pretty good in terms of not having a lot of pain, but...
Ricky Romero is certainly facing an uphill battle. The former All-Star is biding his time in Triple A Buffalo trying to prove to everyone he still has what it takes. On Friday, he sure made everyone took notice. Friday night was the second game of the new and improved Ricky Romero. In a recent article by John Lott of the National Post, Romero said he was "ditching" his...
ARLINGTON, Texas Making a change for change's sake almost never works, but what the Rangers have been doing for six games isn't working, either.
The Rangers lost their sixth game in a row Sunday mainly because of a stagnant offense. The temptation is to shake things up, but manager Ron Washington would rather dig in and trust that things will turn around naturally.
Texas Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler has been activated from the Disabled List and bat leadoff for the Rangers in Toronto. Kinsler, no stranger to injury has missed nearly a month with an intercostal strain and will return to face RA Dickey and the Blue Jays. The 30-year-old second baseman has stayed healthy the past two seasons, playing in 155 and 157 games after playing in...
Add this one to the list of strange injuries. The Texas Rangers were without the services of Jeff Baker last night. The reason? Baker suffered a sprained thumb after high-fiving a teammate. The injury was bad enough to keep him out of last night's lineup and list him as day-to-day.
According to Anthony Andro of Fox Sports Southwest, Baker's thumb was bent back all...
Adam Lind and Colby Rasmus both hit two-run homers and the Toronto Blue Jays won their fourth game in a row, beating the sliding Texas Rangers 6-1 on Saturday.
Even with the unexpected early return of second baseman Ian Kinsler from his rehabilitation assignment, the Rangers' season-long losing streak reached five games. All of those losses are at home, and they've dropped...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Adam Lind and Colby Rasmus both hit two-run homers and the Toronto Blue Jays won their fourth game in a row, beating the sliding Texas Rangers 6-1 on Saturday.
Even with the unexpected early return of second baseman Ian Kinsler from his rehabilitation assignment, the Rangers' season-long losing streak reached five games. All of those losses are at home...
As amazing as the 2012 season was, the excitement that surrounded that final home stand when the A’s finally took over the division lead from the Rangers on the final game of the season, their 2013 path towards a postseason appearance is shaping out to be more of a statement season than the surprising Cinderella tale. My guess, most A’s fans will gladly trade the anxiety filled...
In their return home, the Toronto Blue Jays will seek to extend their longest win streak in two seasons while helping Josh Johnson register his first victory with the club.
After taking a couple extra days to heal a blister, Johnson will try to end his drought with another strong outing against the Colorado Rockies on Monday night.
After dropping the opener to a six-game trip,...
The A’s opened a pivotal four-game series in Arlington against the Rangers on Monday with an 8-7 loss.
Both starting pitchers were shaky on the night, as Dan Straily and Nick Tepesch were hit around and ultimately earned no decisions for their efforts.
A.J. Pierzynski banged a two-run home run off the foul pole in the second against Straily, putting Texas up 2-0. The next inning...
The Oakland Athletics have taken control of the AL West in part because of the Texas Rangers' struggles on their longest homestand of the season.
The A's will try to add to those woes while padding their advantage in a four-game series that begins Monday night.
Oakland trailed by one game in the division after Texas won the opener of an 11-game homestand last Monday. The...
