After starting two straight series with victories this year, it shouldn’t really surprise anyone by now that the Blue Jays have done it again, this time opening up their weekend set with the Los Angeles Angels with a hard-fought 3-2 victory that started with a rookie’s struggles on the mound for the Blue Jays and ended in a pitcher’s duel. The arm, of course, was Kyle Drabek, who made his debut by dominating the Minnesota twins just last weekend. Today, however, things did not start as swimmingly for the rookie. Drabek struggled tremendously with the strike zone in the early innings, issuing 4 walks over his first 3 innings for work. Part of it was wildness from the right-hander, yet another part was the unusually tight strike zone from home plate umpire Bob Davidson that had Drabek visibly frustrated at times.
